Just taken delivery of a Mondeo Zetec, and the manual claims that the "beltminder" can be switched off. Having sat in two car wash queues listening to the annoying little bleeper, can anyone shed light on how this isolation is carried out?

A seatbelt warning lamp has been installed on Mondeo vehicles (not on ST220 vehicles) since June 2002. This seatbelt warning lamp is activated if the seatbelt of the driver/front passenger is not fastened and the vehicle is travelling faster than approximately 7 km/h.
The airbag module receives this information from the seatbelt buckle switches, from the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) (Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)) and, for the seatbelt of the front passenger, from the occupant classification sensor. This sensor recognises when a person is sitting on the front passenger seat. The seatbelt warning function will be discontinued for the front passenger from 06/2003.
The seatbelt warning lamp is located on the instrument panel.
After the ignition is switched on (ignition key to position II), the module checks with the aid of the seatbelt buckle switches whether the driver/front passenger have fastened their seatbelts.
If this is not the case then the warning lamp comes on and a warning signal sounds (duration 6 seconds, followed by a pause of 30 seconds) once the vehicle exceeds a speed of approximately 7 km/h.
After around 5 minutes the warning lamp goes out and the signal tone no longer sounds.
There are three ways of deactivating the seatbelt warning lamp:
• 1. Fasten and then unfasten the belt (in which case, the lamp will be reactivated after the ignition has been switched off)
• 2. Reconfigure the airbag control module with the aid of WDS (permanent deactivation).
• 3. Manual deactivation (permanent deactivation).
The following steps are necessary to do this:
• 1. Starting position is ignition OFF and driver's seat belt not fastened,
• 2. then turn the ignition key to position II,
• 3. wait until the seatbelt warning lamp goes out (on the US version, approx. 1 minute, on the European version approx. 5 seconds),
• 4. fasten and unfasten the seatbelt three times in a row (at least 0.5 seconds),
• 5. switch the dipped beam headlamps on and off,
• 6. fasten and unfasten the seatbelt three times in a row again (at least 0.5 seconds),
• 7. steps 4 - 6 must be carried out within 60 seconds
• 8. after step 6, the warning lamp will come on for 3 seconds
• 9. fasten and unfasten the seatbelt when the warning lamp goes out (at least 0.5 seconds). The warning lamp is now deactivated.
• 10. Deactivation of the belt warning lamp is acknowledged by the lamp flashing 12 times within 3 seconds. After a further 3 seconds, this flashing sequence is repeated,
• 11. The procedure is then completed
• 12. If step 9 is not performed within 10 seconds of the warning lamp going out, then the complete procedure needs to be restarted from the beginning.
