..keep wondering which would make the better family car to own, the ST220, or Mk2 Focus ST. Mondeo ST values seem to be on the up, but they are still a bit cheaper than the Focus, which due to its following has quite decent residuals (£6500 for a 9 year old Ford really is quite good). The Focus is quicker but thirstier; the Mondeo counters with more space...its also much rarer. I saw 6 Focus STs this morning just looking out of the window of my local McDonalds!

Anyone owned both?

Consider the 2.5t mk4 mondeo

All the good bits of the Focus but with the extra space and refinement of the mondeo

Yep, owned both.

ST220 for 4 years, Focus ST for 2 years and counting.

Mondeo is a better cruiser, less overt and better built. Handles pretty well and hides its bulk. Really needs Focus ST brake upgrade and an exhaust to make it what it should have been.

Tuning options a plenty for the Focus, and I bought mine with the Mountune kit so is quicker than the Mondeo. In standard trim little between themi suspect.

Mk4 2.5T Mondeo is a good shout, but not sure on prices.

Funny you should mention that car, but yes, I have been keeping an eye out for them. Rare car that seems to be at least 2 grand cheaper, age for age, mileage for mileage, than the Focus ST. I guess what puts me off a little, like the Focus, is the thirst. I understand the Mondeo ST220 can average high 20s MPG, the 2.5 turbo more like low 20s....

Like for like journeys I have found little difference between the two with my driving style.

However, a few bhp less than the Focus ST.

Focus ST, without a doubt. I can't think of any reason to choose the ST220 instead, unless you really need an estate.

Hello mate, long time no see!

220 is a better motorway car, quieter and better built - IMO

More discreet too, but then anything is compared to an electric orange focus...

Hello mate. I tend to avoid the forums these days, what with all the badge snobs and know-it-alls. smile

Fair point about motorway cruising but when, like us, you're used to a shouty TVR, it's all relative wink. As for the ST220 being better built, that just means it's more difficult to take apart when it inevitably breaks...

But, just to show what a hypocrite I am, I'm currently at my desk, writing a Fast Ford feature about the wonders of the ST220 estate. Honestly laugh .

Hope you're enjoying the Focus ST anyhow - I always found them far better than the ST220 for thrashing around the back roads. Can't wait to try the new RS.

hehe

Yeah, really enjoying the Focus. The MP260 is what it should have been from the factory IMO.

I do miss the ST220, but day-to-day the Focus is a more sensible option for me (only two of us, mainly A and B road driving). I've had cruise control fitted to it, and it made a surprisingly good GT across France this summer (drinks a bit though hehe )
