The "Engine Malfunction" light has come up on the fiancées Focus. We just had it services and they noticed oil around the Turbo area. Ford want £100 to read the fault code, which seems very steep.

Can anyone recommend a code reader or simple way of reading the code myself?

If it's the yellow engine light then a generic code reader should be able to read it. I use a bluetooth one connected to my phone using the Torque app.

If it's a message without the light (I've had 'Engine Systems Fault' before), and/or it's going into limp mode, the cheap readers don't tend to find the fault.

I ended up getting the fault codes read at an independent garage for £20.

It's the red warning that comes up on the dash computer and when cleared turns into the red "i". Doesn't seem to go into Safe Mode and the warning comes up around 80% of the time the car is started.
