Afternoon all, we recently brought a 2010 Fiesta 1.6 TDCI into the household (less than a month ago...) and last week it failed to start one evening. The engine was cranking over but wouldn't fire up, after some help by an RAC chap it was diagnosed as a fuel system problem and recovered.

The quote for replacing the fuel pump we have been given stands at £950, is this about right? The garage stated the pump alone is around £500, this sounded expensive to me at first but having checked myself I can confirm this is true. The quoted price also includes diagnostics and a few other little bits and bobs that diesels need when undergoing this kind of work eg fuel filter etc. The garage is a local independent but pretty reputable diesel specialist.

Lastly, are fuel pumps common failure points on these cars/engines? As I say the car is a 2010, with around 71k and full service history.

I know my way around cars pretty well but unfortunately haven't got the first clue about diesels and this is the first Ford we've had, any help appreciated. thumbup Thanks!

I've worked on a number of these engines, and while they have many issues, fuel pumps are not one that I have come across. It would be interesting to understand how the garage came to the conclusion it's the fuel pump.
However, assuming it is the pump, it's a difficult fiddly job to fit - the pump is buried down the back of the engine, and is hard to get to. Plus you will need the timing gear to be removed, and the inlet manifold, and a fair bit of plastic.
You may wish to consider a second hand pump. As I say, they are not known for breaking, so the chances of getting a good second hand unit are very high. (Assuming it is the Bosch system on your specific car).

The garage have stated to me it's a Bosch fuel pump, yes.

As far as the diagnosis goes, the RAC mech sprayed his can of magic ignition fluid stuff (hehe) down the intake tract and the car fired up and then cut out shortly after, so after this we knew it was fuel related.
It then went into the garage where they confirmed it was the fuel system. They originally said it was just the solenoid/valve (?) within the fuel pump/system (?), this was replaced and the car was running but still experiencing low fuel pressure so was running very rough as you'd imagine. They gave me a call and said they'll need to pull the whole fuel pump as they suspect that's the only possibility remaining..

As you can see I really don't have the first clue how these fuel systems work haha!

Hi, I have a Ford Fiesta 1.6 tdci and it was working and everything fine. I left it for one day and next day it won’t start.
When the recovery guy came he checked it and run some tests on the obd2 he said 0 Psa fuel pressure.

We checked the fuses he said all of them good. Relay is clicking as well. We lifted the car a bit he went underneath it to hear the fuel pump but nothing. He said most probably it will be the fuel pump. Now the thing is I took it to a garage and they took the tank off . For my surprise there was only a fuel sender in the tank and not a pump/sender or pump. I mean there is no way a gauge with 2 hoses will pump fuel right?

Anyway, we changed it , but nothing, then they said it could be some valve or common rail something? My point is I really hope is not the high pressure pump underneath the engine , because otherwise I think I will be commuting on my push bike and that’s it. The pump alone is about £500 and to install and this and that.... uff boy .

Anyone wants to tell me that it might not be the fuel pump and raise my hopes? 🙏🏻

Thank you all. Btw I’m new I don’t know where to post. Help in that is much appreciated as well. Cheers

Had a similar issue with a 1.6 HDI on a Fiesta. It broke down 80 miles after a big service. So it must be the service right?
When I looked at it,it was developing 0 bar in the fuel rail. But the fuel solenoid wasn't operating. And the fuel solenoid wasn't operating, because the engine ECU wasn't being powered. And the engine ECU wasn't being powered because the CAN system had failed, because in turn the terminal resistor in the switch module on the steering wheel had failed.

So don't assume it's the pump.

Oh, and you should shout at you garage, because a basic reference check would have shown no lift pump in the tank.
