can anyone tell me of any problems i may encounter while changing my 96 escort diesel van engine to a turbo diesel engine as i am considering this!
Depending on which car you are taking the engine from, the wiring will need to be adapted to suit, also I doubt the exhaust will match up to the one on the van. The best thing will be to compare the pictures in the Haynes manuals or compare a TD car to yours. If their was a TD version of your van then it should be possible, you just need all the right parts.

I wouldn't bother tbh, even the turbo charged variant wasn't that good.
The TD engine has been around in a couple of forms over the last few years with more and more electronic interference on the emission side.
on a like for like basis there are differences between the two in
Base engine....(water pump, oil returns etc)
exhaust, (turbo is part of the exhaust manifold and is a larger bore) inlet system needs to incorporate.
MTX75 transmission was used to handle the extra torque, the iB5 fails the CV's and driveshafts are also unique to turbo'd escort
fuel pump is different, needs to provide on boost enrichment etc
Later vehicles such as yours used engine management system to control fuel delivery timing (no3 injector has a sensor built in) amongst other bits and bobs which your N/A engine won't have.
If you really do want to do it, find a car with a rear end impact and nick everything from under the bonnet
