2014 Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost - reasons not to?
Discussion
Try a search and take note of the low millage engines that blow up, not many but there does seem to be a problem? but then there allways is on a new production run, my advice is never buy new tech, no matter what waffle the manufacturers give you problems are never fully sorted untill a few years into production, even on 15 year old bangers i never buy early modles only late.
Most problems with engine failure seem to be coming from the cooling system.
There's a pipe that runs from the expansion bottle to the engine that can crack and lose it's coolant. Also there's seems to be a susceptibility of seepage from the water pump so keep a close eye on your levels! These engines seem to run hot anyway so it's critical you act upon any coolant loss.
If buying used, make sure that the correct oil has been used. Ford insist on 5W20 oil but this isn't widely available yet and I've heard of garages using 5W30 instead. Ford say this grade is only to be used for top ups where the proper grade is not available NOT for general use. it's only a minor difference but Ford may refuse to honour the warranty if you use the wrong oil. On another thread a guys focus went bang and Ford said they wouldn't honour the warranty if the wrong oil had been used. If it's been serviced outside of Ford, I'd be a bit wary.
Also, you won't get anywhere near official mpg figures. I have the focus 100 bhp eco boost and I get around 40 mpg but I use my car mostly in urban areas and usually in traffic. Had mine for 2 years and so far it's been faultless.

I've got one in the 125bhp guise, only just ticked over 3k miles though so I cant comment on long term reliability. it pulls well, sounds nice and is far nicer place to sit than the old mk7.
it's still new tech though and the engines do seem very highly strung, so I don't really know how they're going to wear their miles.
if it's between the 1.0 and the 1.2 though, then the 1.0 gets my vote every time.

Pistonheads at it's best.
The engine failures all seem to relate to the coolant system in early ecoboost Focuses, so isnt applicable here. As stated, the oldest arent yet 3 years old yet though. You could wait 10 years to see if they hold up before committing to one?
It is both a Ford, and has a grill. If this news is a surprise and puts you off, the car it probably isnt for you.

Well I have only had my Fiesta Zetec S 125ps Ecoboost 1.0 for 3 months & 2400 miles so can't comment on the reliability really.
However, It's a cracking little car. I owned a Focus ST and then (due to situation changes) a Fiesta 1.6TDCi previous to this car and I have to say this beats them both hands down. Obviously not as fast as the Focus but just as much fun and such nice handling.
The only down side I can think of is the long gear ratios. This car could really do with a 6 speed box.
I used to steer clear of Fords but nowadays I don't think you can beat them for the money.

I've just put a deposit down on a new candy blue zetec S to replace my Swift Sport which I've owned since 2008. Got to wait 12 weeks though....
Boo!
First impressions on the test drive were very positive in terms of handling, ride and power. I wondered if I'd get away with the cheaper 100ps version fiesta, but in the end went for the S and glad I did.

Hi all
I'm driving this engine 1.0 125 HP in Denmark (in Ford Focus MkIII car is from 4 / 2012)
I'm now at 88.000 miles /(143.000 km) and so far never any problem with the engine (nor the car)
Mine seems to be equipped with electical cooling water pump which prevent oil from boiling in the turbo
after extensive driving . I've heard it working just couple of times (some cars are euipped with this system some not)
Overall just regular maintance oil chg, brakes etc and no oil consumption
(I'm changing now engine oil into 5w-30 with higher hths 3.1 as I like to have higher safety margin for the oil film , in my opinion the
Castrol 5w20 Professional E which is HC (Hydro Cracked )oil is not optimal as hths 2.6)) Only reason Ford say 5W-20 is because of fuel economy
but chg to 5w30 is not measureable in normal driving https://www.ravenol.de/en/products/usage/d/Product...
Good luck with your ecoboost engine and not all becomes ecoboom, sorry to hear abourt those who became

Just rebooting this thread as I have been scrolling through Autotrader today looking at 2014/15 Fiesta Ecoboosts.
Is there any change of opinion on these since this thread started? I know in 2018 Ford did a recall for 2012/13 year ecoboosts.
Had no issues with mine. It goes back in 2 months. Is there any change of opinion on these since this thread started? I know in 2018 Ford did a recall for 2012/13 year ecoboosts.
They are a very common engine in most Fords since 2012 - If there was a crazy amount of problems you'd have heard of them

Yeah, I know what you're saying and I've done some research. The degas pipe recall affected 44,682 cars built during 2012/13 and the number of failures is a tiny percentage of the number of ecoboosts produced. They are a very common engine in most Fords since 2012 - If there was a crazy amount of problems you'd have heard of them
But then you go on any forum and someone seems to know someone whose ecoboost has gone pop, with some of them being produced after 2013 and it sows seeds of doubt in your mind. There was even a thread on here started by someone whose car failed.

No-one ever goes online and says "My car works fine"
