1999 ST24 with Noisy Power Steering

Hi all

my Mondeo ST24 has got a noisy power steering pump (?), which sort of hums loudly at tickover and then eases off with revs. At the last service, my (independent) dealer said he could put some additive in which would quieten it down, but they forgot to do it.

Anyone know what are my options?

The only time the pump on my mondeo was noisy was when air was getting into it but then it groaned as you turned the wheel and not at idle. Mine was caused by a leak in the power steering fluid cooler.

I'd check if air is getting into the system and fix any leaks if there are any, try the additive if you like, put up with the noise until it breaks or buy a new pump.

Mine used to do this all the time. It is, unfortunately, a sign that the PAS pump is on its way out. But try the additive or even get the garage to change the fluid as it does make a difference.
