Escort 1.6 Zetec chipping?
Discussion
My R reg Escort 1.6 16v Zetec is sh*t slow! Fuel consumption is ever decreasing (19.7mpg after last fill up ), and I cant live with it any longer.
I dont want it to sound "chav", so was thinking get some new plugs, and maybe magnecor leads? Do you think this will help?
I think a rechip may also be on the cards. Does anyone know where I can get a rechip done. I dont want to risk a £2 job from ebay as they sound like a quick to break your car (especially if you fit it wrong!). What would I expect to pay for this, is £300 - 400 about right; and what power gains (I know it wont be much but it only has 88hp to start with)?
Regards

First off
Before you try and increase power delivery, you really need to get the car running properly, 20mpg ave is no where near what they normally return.
You'll notice no difference between 10mm Magnecor leads and triple contact plugs when compared to the standard motorcraft silicone leads and platinum plugs, so save the cash.
I would suggest a change of plugs and all filters before searching for more power, then depending on your cash, either go for the Dastek unichip which is mapped to the car on a rolling road, or a superchip.
I've come across no end of running concerns with the powerchip type mods, where by the owner of the car simply inserts the chip module into the PCM,they tend to get a poor contact and bring about starting and running issues.
Your car will almost certainly be running on EEC IV so that will rule out the use of a superchip Bluefin.
hope it helps
