Burny smell inside S-Max when stopped at traffic lights
Discussion
Hi all. I'm getting a burning smell inside the car when I stop at traffic lights. It seemed like burning oil to me, but oil levels are fine, no residue on driveway under car, no signs of drips on pipes so it's a bit of a mystery! I can't find (with my limited google skills) any common issues so I thought I'd turn to you guys in the hope that you may have some suggestions on how to try and diagnose the problem please?
Which engine do you have?
Oil/burning smell was a fault on 2.2TDCI engines as there due to a faulty oil breather. Ford have a replacement modified pipe available.
Have a look over on www.smaxownersclub.com for more info on the TSB reference to use that'll get Ford to do the work FOC.
If it's not the 2.2TDCI, the smell could caused be the "regeneration" on the DPF, where it's burning off deposits - sounds like a small jet engine running sometimes. The deposits in the DPF can be worse if the car's used for many short journeys.

Thanks chaps. The model is the 2.2Tdci and it's a 2009 model. Is this one affected? It only seemed to start happening after my last service (May 2013) and I thought they'd spilled a bit of oil and it would burn off. It's been there all through summer and into winter now. It's not horrendous, just slightly concerning!
I got similar syptoms with my 04 cmax 2.0 Tdci.
I think its a leak in the exhaust feed to the EGR valve.
I'm taking it in (on Wednesday) to the local diesel specialists for a proper diagnosis and fix.
UPDATE 13 Jan - the local diesel specialists say they can't pinpoint where its coming from, so I'm going to take it to Fords ! They should have the TSBs and the specialist tools.
