'Ello all

I recently bought an Escort (97P saloon) to clean up and sell on, and I'm at a loss as to how to get the radio working again.

It won't even power up, and all the cables appear to be in place. The real ball-ache is that the Ford audio manual has been lost some time ago.

Anyone know any good resources, either online or in the North West, that could hel me get it up and running again? Or will it be easier to buy a cheapy head unit and swap it in?

Has the battery been disconnected and it's waiting for the code?
This happened on our Fiesta but at the same time the display went so I didn't know it was waiting for the code, shine a torch on it and see if you can see anything. I'm assuming it the green LCD version?

Probably easier to buy a cheapo replacement.

I'm guessing your car has the large double din audio unit. If so, it no longer has a fuse on the outside of the audio unit it's self.

Is it totally dead?
Do the interior lights work?
the fuse for the audio is also the interior light, it's usually marked with blue paint or stickers on the fuse box.

Failing that, you'll have to test the +'s and -'s on the wiring harness.

Or does the display come on, but no code or sound?

post back with somemore details on the audio unit (the model number would be handy) and exactly what it's doing and i'll try and help further.

(apologies for the O/T)

Hi, the eye is lumpy but the gritty feeling has gone, I visited the GP on monday evening, and to my surprise he failed to offer any constructive advice.
I told hih what 968 thought could be the concern, to which he responded with a puzzled look and a quick search of his intranet for the issue.

After checking my weight and blood pressure and asking about rheumatism, I was sent on my way with orders to bathe the eye in salt water solution and return if it's still up in 2 weeks.

I got more valid advice on here than I got from the GP. Maybe he'd have preffered to treat me for a common cold!!!!!!!!

It's model no. 2006, it's actually DIN-sized held in a double-DIN blanking plate. It still says on the front that it's a Ford keycode unit though. Is it possible it's from an earlier model?

Cheapy replacement head unit sounds better and better at the mo. It comes down to the cost of fixing it versus how much it knocks off it's value to not have a working stereo.

Edited to add: the interior light works fine.

right o

The 2006 rds audio unit was used in earlier escort 95 series vehicles, up to late 95 iirc, so it's possible it's a genuine item to the car.

The 2006 unit does have the small mini blade fuse in the rear, the unit has a permanant live feed taken from the cigar lighter and the switched live feed comes from the interior light fuse.

if it was just the permanent live that was missing you'd still have the radio powering up, but it would need the code inputing on each occassion.

from memory an exchange audio unit from a ford parts outlet would be around £90+vat, which isn't really a viable option.

If the fuse sorts it and you don't have the keycode, drop me a line and i'll see what I can do for you.

That's fantastic, cheers fella!

I'll have a look at the fuse tomorrow and see what I can do. If it's had it, will an aftermarket head unit connect up no problem, or will it only take a Ford unit?

It's the saloon version of this model if that helps.

The aperture for the audio unit will take a normal aftermarket set, sometimes the little cage they slide into makes things a bit tight, so a few mins with a small files sorts that out.

The connectors on the loom are ford's own and not the ISO blocks that will be found on the aftermarket sets. To convert the cables quickly and easily buy the autolead adaptors for both power and speaker looms.

Or, if outlay is to be kept at a minimum, chop the plugs off and hardwire the new connector (will come on the new set) to the ford wiring.
