I have a 5 speed Ford Gearbox which I purchased 2nd hand and which I intend to install in Lotus 7 type kit car.

How can I tell if its a Type 9 box or an earlier 5 speed variant?

Is there any markings on the gearboz casing that identify the gearbox type?

Thx

Type 9 IS the early 5 speed box

it has a cast bell housing and main body, the extention housing is alloy and reverse gear is up next to 1st

the later MT75 box is all alloy and reverse is down below 5th

T5 borg warner box from the early cossy's is similar to the type 9 item

yup, thats a heavy duty type 9 box.

Be sure to make or aquire a decent gasket for the join between the casing and the bell housing, i've stripped and rebuilt too many of those old things because people missed it out.

The selector shaft (visable towards the top of the box) slides into a drilling on the bell housing.

It, looks like one of the later heavy duty boxes from that pic, so if you buy a gasket, make sure it fits around the uprated counter shaft plug (with the 3 blue bolts in)
