Hi,

I have been told that when the Mk4 XR3i was first produced, the front spot lights were an optional extra, and that they became standard equipment later on. Any truth in this?

It appears they were standard according to the brochure

Thats a 1988/89 brochure, by which time I believe they were standard. I'm told that in 1986, when the mk4 was first released, they were not standard equipment?

I was selling Ford around that time,i`m pretty certain they were optional like alot of equipment, things were made standard as the product became older.

I only ask as there seems to be confusion among the Ford clan sometimes about what should be fitted to certain cars.It seems that Ford just stuck on whatever they had laying to hand at times.

My RS16i came with Carello 640 spots and Hella fogs but there are some that had the matching set of Hellas.

The S2 turbo was the same, some had Carellos and others had the Ford accessory lights.

As you say the spots were always standard on the RS models, any RS with Ford badged lights would have meant they had been replaced some time IMO.
We could always fit dealer fit spots and fogs to all Escorts as part of the PDI but they were always Ford badged from the accessories brochure and had a small squarish bit on the top leading edge of the lense, most had small Ford logos in the middle of the lense aswell IIRC.

Thats Great, thankyou. I have a C reg mk4 XR3i with no spots, and I couldn't find any evidence of it ever having had the lights fitted. The previous owner told me they were options at the time, but I was unsure how true this was?

Out of interest, where did you find the information?

Wow not many C plate mk 4s survived, we had major rust problems on all the early cars. I have an old price/options list here if you need more info.

Here she is, 1986 and 52,000 miles.

Built in Germany I believe, before production moved to Dagenham?

My 1987 when it was about 4 years old

I remember people having light front end nudges in these would result in expensive bonnet dents!
