New Ford Focus

Images released of the next generation Focus

Ford have chosen Beijing as the venue to unveil their new Focus. The four door "teaser" version of the car will be the most sophisticated Focus to date. Engineered in Germany and with 'European' styling, Ford are keen to push the Focus in China - the world's biggest growth market for cars. The Mondeo is already proving a success in the country.

The car is very much an evolution of the current model in looks. In Ford speak:

That evolution is primarily in the surface language of Focus. The Concept aims to convey solidity and substance while boasting generous curves and a distinct shoulder. It is athletic too, thanks to a lower sweeping roofline and a fast rear screen angle that serves to visually elongate the overall shape. The compelling logic in the exterior design of this 4-door car can be found in greater interior and trunk space - achieved without adding significantly to overall length or sacrificing the crisp appeal that Focus has come to stand for.

One of the most distinguishing features of the car is its new lamps. Ford have made extensive use of LED technology developed with Osram Opto Semiconductors. The front lamps produce a continuious ring of light when switched on giving a cool white appearance.

Audi/VW Design influence ?

I think I'm correct in thinking that some Audi/VW designer(s) went to Ford hence the current Mondeo looks Passat like.

Not a bad design I think, but not too brave.

What happened to the cutting edge styling of the initial version?

Bland 4 door german eurobox. Shame the mazda3 doesnt have independant rear suspension otherwise that'd be a far better styled product.

I think it looks great, those creases in the bonnet look a bit volvo like. I heard that the hatchback will resemble a Seat Leon at the rear, should look really good from some of the spy shots I've seen.

Pfft, starting to look very euro trashy.

I'm starting to like BMW's new styling since VAG and Ford Motor Co seem to be going down the same alike looks across all brands. Eugh!

I think the new Astra looks nicer...

New Mazda 3 (and Volvo) share floorpan/underpinnings. AFAIK Mazda is Focus underneath.

This is surely just a concept anyhow - I bet it doesn't look this good in production. Look at the 5-door pics already released -

Yes, you're right about the Seat rear only it's not as nice. AutoExpress have some pics.

Indeed, if you say this car would be a new Audi, VW, Mazda, whatever I would believe you too. It looks great but it is certainly not a distingtive car design. The BMW 1 on the otherhand is. (What? distingtive or a car design?). Do we want that? Average lease driver looks inside to see the added value.
This looks bigger than the today Focus. And that's good I guess.
New Golf, new 307, new Astra, new Focus . . . Tell me which does not fit in. Estate will look lovely . . .

Yep, Mazda 3, Focus and Volvo S40 all on the same C170 platform.

Whats the bets the more 'interesting' design features don't make it into production, and it ends up pretty much like all the other mundane fords

Why is it that the new Focus is something to look forward to, the new Mazda 3 is OK if you like that kind of thing but the new Volvo is like the red haired step child. It is correct that the new Mazda 3, the New Volvo S40/V50 and the NEXT Focus are/will built on the same platform from Ford Motor Corporation, but the Mazda and the Volvo are already on sale (Volvo first) so why is it that when you by a Mazda or Volvo everybody (well OK not everybody but a lot) say it's just a focus with a different badge. You can't buy the Ford yet!.

Oh and by the way you can buy right now a new vehicle from the FMC with 220hp, six speed gearbox and something that Ford and Mazda at the moment don't offer all wheel drive.

Not a rant, just a comment

It looks to me like a cross between a Mondeo and the previous-gen Vauxhall Astra. It sort-of works though...I'll reserve judgement until I see the hatchback.

gah I know its the same platform as the mazda 3 - which is why I used it as an example - 'same' car, different styling - unfortunatly inferior suspension as standard.

Mazda is supposed to be doing hot versions of the 3 and 6, 4WD and decent power (200+ for the 3 and 260 for the 6), but the prices I've seen quoted for them are way to low to be real and far to close to current top of the line cars.

As said, I thought we'd already seen the real new focus, so why these? it does lok quite concepty with the crome bits and phat alloys.

What's the point of producing a concept version of a model you're about to release?

Maybe Ford enjoy disappointing all their customers by showing them a bunch of design features they won't be able to buy and a car that looks better than the one they'll drive out of the showroom.

I agree - looks like a Passat / Mondeo ...

Not cutting EDGE of the original.

With bland looks like these - at least the old Focus will hold it's value and be more sought after.

Me - Yep I've got an ST170 and love it and see myself buying one of these unless the production version looks much better !
