Mk1 XR2 - am I mad?
Discussion
Just been enquiring about a really good example of a Mk1 XR2 I saw on the internet.
Was quietly relieved it was sold as I'm not sure I could have resisted the temptation. I mean look at them:
I'm not buying it for the power - I've got...
...with four times the bhp.
But I miss the tiny little, chuckable 1300S that was my first car for an astounding ten years:
For that whole time I wanted an XR2 - now I can afford one to be a second weekend car and hence utterly pamper it and only bring it out on special occasions, and I'm acutely aware that there's only about 200 left.
Do I need my head testing or should I continue the hunt? Will I find it desperately disappointing, even as a pampered toy? I don't think I will, but I'm interested in what others think.

I have never driven one but if I had the space, would probably have bought myself one by now (a mk2 though) - go buy one!
ETA - I should probably elaborate...they are good looking, cheap, would be bound to turn a few heads whilst being a fun car at the same time. I quite fancy one as a way of teaching myself more about car maintenance/restoration also.

I think the mk1 has dated better than the mk2. Oddly I see the odd mk1 zipping about, I haven't seen a mk2 in ages, though I believe many more were made.
There's one on PH (and ebay - ending tomorrow) at the mo:

Looks like he's done a lot of work to it, so why am I reticent?

Don't! If the mk1 is anywhere near as good as my mk2 (i reckon it will be much better!), you will have a ball :-)
The most fun, however, is on a nice summers day evening so you should definitely look forward to that next year. Also, revel in the fact that if you keep it nice, I don't think it will ever depreciate.

I say go for it mate, if I had the spare money and space I would, I think they are a great little car and one of my all time favourites.
And if you dont like it, then just sell it, simples!
Already bought .And if you dont like it, then just sell it, simples!
Vendor has fessed up to a few extra niggles at my request, but it's all really basic stuff, so I may have struck 80s gold.
As you say, even it's a dog I am unlikely to lose a lot on it, providing I don't start throwing good money after bad.

OK, so I must be mad. I just bought it.
Now the fun begins...
That looks a cracking car, don't expect anything 30 years old to be anything like what we all drive now.Now the fun begins...
Just enjoy it for what it is, I'll bet on your first drive you'll be like "what the hell have I bought".
I know as I've just gone down this route myself with a bike though.
Enjoy and have fun.
