Work opportunities with Ginetta?
Discussion
This may seem completely random and a strange question to ask, but I need some advice, so thought I'd ask here! basically, I'm a music student. I'm currently studying at Leeds College Of Music, but I'm having second thoughts about the course. I've always been into cars, and since buying my own TVR I've been getting more into the mechanical side of things. I don't pretend to have any knowledge in the field, I just learn as I go along. Now, I'd never really looked into Ginetta much until the other day (I knew they were British and made some very nice cars, but that was all). Anyway, I discovered they're based about 20-30 mins outside of Leeds. I was wondering, do they offer apprenticeships in engineering there? Or perhaps just need part time workers to help out? I'd really like to help out and be involved in some way, so anybody with any advice, or contacts, please contact me!
Check Ginetta website.

If you are doubting what you are doing, talk to those involved but if you know in your heart it's not want you want, then change direction to the way you want to go. If you don't you will never know, and may regret it.
You live only the once.
Today, you don't just need knowledge - you need loads of confidence to get on... just turn up and ask!
Worst they can do is turn you away (all part of life's experience).
Then again you might get a tour of the factory

My careers advisor suggested I ring them first or possibly send them a CV with a cover letter explaining my situation? Or shall I just turn up one day and ask to speak to someone involving careers? http://www.ginettacars.com/

I can't advise you...
but, if it were me, I wouldn't write (too informal - will they reply? will you remember to enc a stamped addressed envelope? will you be able to stand the waiting? and what if nothing comes in the post?) and I wouldn't phone either (they can't tell what you're like, you could call and it may be extremely busy)... No, I'd turn up in the TVR (I think they like TVRs so I understand) - you have nothing to lose! - during a lunch hour (you were just passing, etc etc).
And if one of them has read this thread, well, it's another talking point for you!
Good luck.

I have no experience of engineering. I have no A Levels (I did a BTEC in Music). I have good GCSEs though and maths and science were always my strongest subjects. I like to work practically, and I'm a quick learner.
All I know is I want to work with cars, and being a huge TVR fan, working at Ginetta would fit right with my view that British is best.
Also, the problem with turning up in my TVR is that I can't insure it until december....which is a bit of a pig as that's over 2 months waiting. Could I ring them and ask for a meeting?

Not quite the same, but having taken volantary redundancy at 43 from a computer engineers job, I fancied a change in Jobs. A TVR garage was wanting mechanics, but all I had to say I was any good at cars was a web site about the car(s) Id built. That got me far enough to talk to the dealership owner, who then gave me the chance to build a Chesil kit car for him, that his mechanics had started and messed up. I completed this succesfully in three months, and was then offered a job, even without "formal qualifications". In the end I went back into IT, but it may be worth offering your services for free for a while, so both parties can see how it works out without commitment.

Good luck! Remember if you can't get to speak to the right person first time, get his name and keep trying.
I'm just going to say that Paul from Pistonheads told me to ring this number, and ask for someone regarding careers (me and Paul have been chatting on Facebook). Hopefully that will get me in touch with the correct person....other than that I could just ask to speak to Lawrence, but I doubt he'll have time for my query?Excellent news! They want my CV to check out, and I've volunteered to help out part time on the G40. It's the first step. I've also quit uni, as I spoke to the head of my course who said that if I can't get myself motivated, I shouldn't stay on. If I take another year out, I can earn some money, play with my TVR, help out at Ginetta and figure out what to do.

Well done!now in exchange for the advice and encouragement a large discount on a G50 would be suitable

Anyhow, it'll be nice to be able to say 'I helped get that car on the road' once the G40 is finished.
