I was doing my MOT pre test earlier and noticed that the reversing light wasn't coming on.

I think it's the sensor on the gearbox as all wiring / other lights at the back of the car are working, but the problem is I'm not sure where the sensor is on the gearbox! Can anyone help?

Also, does anyone know whether the reversing light is part of the MOT? I've heard conflicting opinions. confused

There looks to be wires going into the gearbox from the drivers side of my car if thats any help? as for it being part of the mot, i'm sure they should check, but I've been a few times and they don't. once was in a nova where i had to push and hold the gear lever right back in the reverse position for the light to work!

Thanks, I'll try and get it up on ramps and have a look over the weekend.

Doesn't look like it's on the MOT check list as far as I can tell -

If you have a reverse light fitted i.e a rear light with clear lense then it must work, irrespective of the fact that it is not a test requirement.

Not too sure on that, James is right to an extent with if its fitted it "should" work. Back in the days of the Escort Mk2 they had a rear cluster for the light but it was considered an extra and so wasnt always loomed in. The testing manual makes no reference to reversing lights and are not testable items, however you could be issued with a failure if they were illuminated constantly.

Remember my old grandfather and his Ford Capri got his mot done one morning (always came here to get it done). It failed on a sidelight being out but somehow got confused and did away with his spotlights.

Hove, only just down the 27 then will have to keep my eyes pealed.

SVA requirements state that if a reverse light is fitted, it must work via a sensor. However it is not a requirement to fit a reverse light to a vehicle, so save yourself a few bob and don't bother fitting one.
