Good morning Folks -

Well as reported, I purchased the 2002 G20 with Mazda engine and transmission. Unfortunately, the car's description was "not as advertised" mechanically. In a nutshell, the passenger side half shaft is shot and the diff (a new Quaif unit) leaks. Most immediate question is, does anyone know specifically which part to look/ask for when replacing this half shaft?

Thanks in advance.

Now this could be tricky....
What exactly is the quaiffe diff? Is it quaiffe internals for the Ford Sierra LSD?

As standard the car is fitted with shortened Ford Sierra xr4x4 driveshafts. If the diff has been changed, i expect it will be for a quaife version of the ford diff, in which case the standard drive shaft should fit. If not, I would be finding someone to recondition what you already have.

Alterntaively order a drive shaft from ginetta and take it from there...
There was an agent in america motoamerica? who can probably help if you google them.

Thanks for that James.

As I understand it, the Quaiffe that has been installed was for the Sierra unit. I also have the original diff that I can always put back in if need be.

Motoamerica is no longer in business to my knowledge.

"Shortened" axles huh? Sounds involved. I've heard too that the shafts themselves are not equal lengths on each side. Is this true? At this point, its sounding like my most trouble free route is to order from Ginetta. Any idea how to contact them?

Thanks again!

One other question...

In looking at the rear end, it appears as if these half shafts and their CV joints are sitting at very exaggerated downward angles from the diff to the hub carriers. Is this designed in, or might my car have even more issues?

Thanks again,

Aaron

I have actually just fabricated a pair of longer shafts for my G20 coupe, the originals that I took off were quite simple to fabricate. I'm sure you can find an engineers in your area that could weld a pair up, it's whether you can find a pair of donor shafts to start with.

Basically take the original shaft, cut a section from the centre. My shafts had a total length of 399 mm. Then machine the ends that will be welded together to get a good weld, I did mine in a lathe to get it as true as possible. Then machine the join down so that a sleeve can be put over the centre portion of the shaft. The sleeve wants to be a piece of tube and have about 3-4mm wall thickness and require a small amount of force to slide down the shaft. The sleeve is then welded to the shaft at both ends.

I have known the sleeve welds to crack, these just need to be cleaned up and a weld run round them.

Hope you sort out the problems.

They usually run better if balanced too and most prop shaft makers should be able to repair your old one. RECOPROP? Try putting up a wanted message on the Owners club web site as you may find a SH one. There are a lot of cars racing so you could try contacting one of the racers at a race meeting although it’s the end of the season?
If not then http://www.ginettacars.com/?

Ginetta have them in stock. I was at the factory yesterday and 20 G20's are being built there so plenty of spares in stock. The have orders for 23 G50 cars already so things are looking up.
The Quaife diff used on the G20 is basically the Sierra housing with Quaife internals so externally the same. Let them know the distance between the two flange faces and they should be able to help.
Ginetta are now going places as the new cars and factory are fantastic.
