Hey all, this is my first post on here, so please be gentle!

I've got a Ford Puma 1.7 as my daily driver, and I love the handling, reliability, practicality, looks... ok, everything about it.

However, I also quite fancy something a bit more spicy as a weekend driver, to be kept garaged and cherished. I've found a series 3 G27, and I have to say I've fallen in love with it. I was thinking along the lines of a Westfield, but the Ginetta appeals to me with its classic styling.

As a first sports car, how would you rate it? I'm not much of a mechanic, though I'm more than willing to learn. I'd like something fairly reliable, and not too expensive to repair should it go wrong.

The car I've seen is here, and the spec is listed. What do you think? I've not been able to find much info about them online.

Cheers,

Danny.

Why not, if it floats your boat go for it, Ford mechanichals make it fairly easy to service and the bodywork is largely GRP (so repairable).

Don't rush into it. This one has been 'for sale' for a while.

Yeah, I was a bit worried about the price too - it seems quite a bit lower than others I've seen, and from a dealer too. Not that I've ever complained about that before! If it's been there a while, he may come down on price a bit too - though obviously if it's a dog I'm happy to walk on by. Not that I'd know if it was or not... I think I'll learn from past mistakes and take someone with me who knows what they're doing if I decide to take a look - though it's quite a trek!

Am I right in thinking they are Sierra based?

I think I'll give them a ring about it tomorrow and see what they have to say. Will also research insurance prices too.

Thanks for the advice - and keep it coming!

Cheers,

Danny.

Holy McMoly! Just checked on Confused.com, and the cheapest insurance for me is a mighty £3300.26. I'm 22, have 1 year no claims, and I was after a 1000 limited mileage deal. That's just mad, my 1.7 Puma is £800 a year... I thought that was steep enough.

I'll give Adrian Flux a ring tomorrow, they're usually pretty good at whistling up a decent price. It's game over if I can't get the best part of £3k off that quote!

You could also try AON and it might be worth looking through the Kit car section to see if people have found decent quotes with any insurance companies.

I had quotes of £4,500.00 for the Exige with 12 years no claims bonus, clean licence, no my fault claims, Garaged, used as second car only. AON came in at under £ 1,000.

So don't give up.

Adrian Flux insure my G33 (3.9l V8) for 3190 incl breakdown cover, and Peter Best were at £220. Confused.com best price was £1300. The comparison sites only work for for run of the mill cars.

I think G27 would make a great first sports car as long as u find one that was built properly. I have had lots of performance cars before but my G33 is my first proper sports car and i love it, it was factory built, but still has lots of niggles, butthats part of the character of the car.

There are sometimes a few G27's for sale on the owners club website http://www.ginetta.org and u can also look at the Cottage Classics website and Fereday Cars website. The owners club site currently has a G33 and a G27 for sale.

Confused.com is just for confused motorists with wads of cash ie those with more money than sense. STEER CLEAR!

Adrian Flux used to be best for Ginettas but plenty more out there as well now, shop around, just like you would to find the right car.

I used Adrian Flux a few years ago when I was a young lad (under 25 I think) and got a bloody good deal with them. It had a 190 bhp Vauxhall 16V so I thought I was going to be screwed but was a lot cheaper than hot hatches of the day.

As already suggested try Footman James as well, maybe buy a Kit car magazine and see who advertises in there. I'm pretty sure that a company advertises in the Ginettas owners mag but I can't remember who it is - maybe Heritage ??

If its a second car and will be garaged try Hagerty insurance.

Heritage advertise in the owners mag, but they were £500 for my G33 and never even came back to me on my other cars.

Cheers for all the advice! I've tried Footman James and Heritage, both of them have a 25+ policy on insurance, which is a bit of a stumper as I'm 22.

Adrian Flux as usual have come up trumps, with a quote of £780 in a 1500 mile limited policy. I didn't realise until speaking to them that it will be without a no claims discount,as I've never owned a second car, and will need to build up a seperate NC. If I'd known I'd have bought a shagged out old banger and sat it on the drive
(or in my dad's garage) for a few years to get the NC!

Oh well, £780 is more affordable, and puts things back as a 'maybe'.

Thanks for all your help - I'll keep you posted if I go for it... got some difficult decisions to make about selling off a load of gear from another hobby to be able to afford to do this.

Cheers,

Danny.

Just think - after the first year you'll get 30% NCD so it'll be down to about £500 before you know it !! wink

(Have you checked what you going to do after you've gone above 1500 miles wink you know you will !!)

Did you try Hagerty ?? I know i'm older but my Ginetta and my TVR are insured with them, about 250 quid each and I didn't have to have any NCD. As it will be a second car you might get lucky but don't know if they have an age restriction scratchchin. Bloody nice chaps too !!
