I have a G27 with a knackered Pinto in it and need to fit a new engine. The obvious choice is a 2.0L Zetec but you would have to throw some money at it to get some decent power. The same goes for the Duratec. I am wndering if there are any major issues in mounting these engines and what sort of costs would be involved, I dont want to have a totally empty wallet at the end of it. I was also thinking about a Honda S2000 lump as it already has ample power, I have seen some used engines for under £3k for ECU, wiring loom, engine and gearbox. How easy would it be to put this in.

Not easy is the answer. It runs the opposite way to most other engines...

Zetec cheap and easy to do, still use your existing gearbox diff and prop etc.
You can buy an engine for 150quid, stick some carbs on, or bike tb's and an ecu and away you go.

Duratec might be a better bet - I gather that it has the same orientation as the Pinto (exhaust on right, carbs on left).

Some G27's have Rover V8 engines in them, so I guess space wise you should me ok for most modern powerplants. Beware Honda engines they turn in the opposite direction from normal so you will need a whole new drive train.

I am also aware that there is a G27 with a mazda rotary engine in it. There used to be a website detailing the build, worth googling maybe.

A G27 I once owned was originally built with a Mazda rotary in it, the owner then put a Ford Cosworth turbo in it. As I couldn't afford the insurance of the Cossie I bought it without the engine and fitted a 2 litre Vauxhall 16V engine. Had to dump the fuel injection as it got in the way of the steering rack so fitted twin 50's and had an exhaust manifold made and it chucked out just under 190 bhp which was fun !!

Lots of stuff can be put in but if you are limited to cash then best stick with the pinto/zetec/duratec route which 'should' all be a simliar fitment.

Hi Ade, good to see you've signed up at long last.

I think that Focus ST170 engine is a good buy (£1000 for just under 30000 miles)

I'm going to have a word with people locally over the weekend to see if I can find a decent garage near me to do the swap, unless anyone hear can recommend somewhere closer to you (Southampton or South East London)

Have a good weekend byebye
