Hi All,

I'm wondering if a second hand road legal G12 could be my next track day car but I haven't been able to find any going on sale.

So, what's actually out there on the British roads in terms of manufacturer (are they mostly from the days when the Walklett brothers run Ginetta or from when they run Dare), year of manufacture and different powertrains?

From the pictures I've been collecting, there seems to be many more road legal G12 overseas (USA and Japan I think) than in the UK. Are Dare really producing the G12 for the Japanese market only? Have UK owners been actually buying and registering these cars for road use over the years at all?

How much I should be prepared to pay for whatever UK registered G12 I can potentially come across?

Thanks for any comments.

Alex

road legal g12? yep, a bit scarce!!!
one sold recently was a 'recreation' ['exact copy'] [some say with a 'dodgy'[?] registration ], believed now in belgium .....methinks price was around £35,000
g12's built to original spec won't pass iva, but dare will build you a track day job.
also not really suitable for everyday road use.......
you might look at dare's new car, very much in the g12 style, but fully designed for road

Well, I would've thought a race oriented car (as opposed to a track day car) would be mostly unsuitable for the road for different reasons (gearbox, ground clearance, geometry), and indeed I've never seen for example any Chevron B8 (conceptually similar to the G12 I'd say) with number plates on it, but if you google for pictures of G12, quite a few of them have been shot on roads and show number plates on them (??). Are those maybe American or Japanese? Surely a race car is still a race car regardless of the continent you send it to?

Most likely I can't afford to comission Dare to build me neither a track day Ginetta G12 nor their new road version, I'm pretty sure I'm limited to the second hand market, problem is there isn't such! frown

Cheers,

Alex

Only recently have Dare been building G12s for UK, these will pass IVA.
They will run Ford Ecoboost engines. None yet on the road i believe, but probably soon

Dare have been making road G12s for Japan since 1990s, but with Duratec engines. You could get hold of one from Japan, but then shipping it and IVAing it wil be costly, and they are stil very sought after in Japan.

Dare's 'new' car based on the G12 design, wil be more cost effective with spec from track only to full road car

Sorry geeman, do you mean that Dare are now making an Ecoboost engined G12 that you can make road legal in the UK (through IVA) and on top of that there's also this upcoming G12 look alike road car?

Thanks.

I wanted to clarify this because in principle, I favour the classic G12 over the new look alike since I'm not interested in luxuries such as functional side windows or heater.

I had discovered the PH feature on the new road car through the thread you mention, but when I read it I was focusing on said car and so I missed this key bit: "In fact, the company has already stuck Ecoboost engines into two road-legal G12 cars for UK customers (previously they were track only) and Tom foresees this side of the business taking off".

Conclusion: not an awful lot of them out there (apparently two!), but it can be done and in fact it's being done smile

Cheers,

Alex

The way I see it, the Ecoboost is probably the way to go for type approval, but I'm still unsure as to why they aren't building any Jap-spec G12 (i.e. Duratec engined) for approval through IVA, where it's engine age that counts. I mean since they have been OK to take the IVA route for a couple customers already anyway.
