I want a G27 but need to do some homework.

Ginetta owners club is probably your best bet, but there isn't that much info around. If Ginetta Heritage are still going they may have some info, but I recall that there was an issue with them and Ginetta.
In my experience you won't get much out of Ginetta themselves about the models before LNT's acquisition.

Just what differences exist for each of the various series - was it just cosmetics, headlights etc or is there more under the skin - and what to look for, good and bad, when viewing. Then theres the G27r as well......

I am aware that some have IRS and some do not, not sure about the rest. Engines vary tooh

Certainly a couple of G4 series 4 and early G27 had the option of a Jag IRS as opposed to the live axle if you are considering a 27 I would suggest you will find an IRS more comfortable the latter cars using ford diff etc then as you say it is down to the looks you prefer as to series III or IV car

As the other posters have indicated the main choice is between the live axle or IRS cars. Engines vary across the both chassis types with Ford Zetec and Pinto being the most popular but a variety of others out there such as Vauxhall 16V, Triumph, Rover V8. Apart from the chassis variations the main difference come down bonnet/headlamp options though these can be interchangeable with not too much effort.
I'd start with looking at yourself, if you're over 6 feet tall you may find the car difficult to live with and if you're a little "broad in the beam" you should really consider the later IRS cars as the cockpit has extra width.
There is some info on the build of my G27 at the website link in my PH profile. Plenty of pics of the rolling chassis. Though the car was built with a Pinto engine it now has a new 2.0 Zetec on carbs.

I think the Zetec's a great engine for the G27. There's a blue series 3 for sale at the minute which looks fairly good to me, registered on a P plate.
Would suggest buying one that's been registered and not go down the part built project route (speaking from previous kit car experience) unless you can pick something up very cheap!
Where are you located? Happy to show you mine if you want an idea of dimensions...

If a car has a chassis number and a reg, then must it have been i/sva'd?
I have been looking at this one
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3876048.htm
and have e-mailed the seller re what still needs done to get the 95% finished up to 100%. I was hoping that it had already been tested with the minimum of items fitted and the finishing was cosmetics - like roof fittings etc. Anyone know it?
The closed loop fuel injection seems like a good idea as the last time i had anything with dcoe's it was 15 years ago and they drank like a Glaswegian.

You get the chassis number stamped into the chassis I think that advert is offering a plate you can buy but not sure the car is registered. Also unless you can register new or acquire enough points for age related from don't which is unlikely then you could not transfer that plate. Would check with the owner first

"This engine is dated April 1995 and so is subject to the lesser emission test, although it doesn't matter because the Dunnell injection system will walk through the SVA test."
i would say the car was never registered and therefore needs an IVA test.
I put a "all parts included to complete" Quantum 2+2 through the old SVA test in 2004 and it was a complete nightmare, resulting in 2 tests at a cost of over £100 each, plus about 200 miles of driving to the test centre and back... wouldn't do it again! They were SO strict.
Plus all the hassle of getting it registered with DVLA!
I'd personally go for the other blue G27 for sale, but then again I prefer the look of the Series 3
Would be interested in seeing what one with IRS is like to drive though.
