M4 Bus Lane to be scrapped
Discussion
Being honest..
scrapping the lane is only going to cost money (Around £400k). At this time that is money wasted which could be spent on other minor junction improvements.
Also The only affect of removing the bus lane is just going to cause delay as people do not know how to merge from 3 lanes to 2. Overall the Queue length in miles will be less, but the number of vehicles in the queue will be the same but just spread over 3 lanes and not 2.
My professional opinon as a transport planner.

True if you are only weighing up the cost of altering the infrastructure however if you look at the bigger picture and take into consideration the upside and benefits to commerce, allowing people to get to work quicker and be more productive, the benefit of this knocks £400k in to a cocked hat.

People already have to merge from three lanes in to two.. at the start of the bus lane. Allowing drivers to use the third lane also offers more flexibility if one lane get closed due to accidents, breakdowns etc. If one lane of a three lane carriagway is out of action, that's a reduction of 33% but if it's one in two, 50%.
Now, can you do something about getting those superfluous traffic lights at Winnersh showcase removed?

But that is only looking at this section. If you look at sections further upstream as you said (where they have to merge from 3 ro 2 lanes), then effectivey the removal of the scheme will have no significant benefits or disbenefits for car users.
Its a waste of money at the present moment in time.
I have done work on some developments in the Winnersh triangle but the local authorities are arguing between them of how they shoould change the junctions. Neither of them agree so nothing is being done.

£400k to take some sighs down and black over the road markingscrapping the lane is only going to cost money (Around £400k).
I'll come round this weekend with the lads and do that for £350k
£50k cheaper and operational for next week
My way would be to let the local pikeys take the signs and job done!
My pet hate is the traffic lights they recently put in at the "roundabout" triangle in Tadley near the AWE. The traffic used to flow around there perfectly before and I never saw any traffic problems there at all. Now I usually get caught by at least one and often 2 or all 3 sets of traffic light getting past there! What used to take 20 seconds can now take a few minutes! Ok, it's not a massive delay but why did they bother going to the expense of putting 3 sets of traffic lights in when it flowed just fine before???

Also, please could you confirm the name of the imbecile who backed the mongolian clusterf
k that is the new lights on the A327 at the top of Whitley where the KFC is? A perfectly functioning pair of mini roundabouts has been 'transformed' into a 35 min ball ache with the new lights. Not that i'm bitter mind - it's just another reason not to go into the office......I'm happy about the bus lane - it'll at least wipe the smug grin off the taxi drivers faces.

same thing's about to happen on the A30 by the Windmill.
I wondered what was going on there, great, another reason to stop for nothing as that juntion is empty at the time of morning i pass, but i bet the lights will always be red. Wouldn't mind if they made some of these lights peak time only, but they don't seem to do that anymore.stevieb said:

I would say that you have overlooked several major points and that is i) that although the traffic does have to merge just after the railway bridge at Boston Manor it means that there should be far less road rage because people will not get pissed off with rogues using the bus lane and ii) it makes sense to use all available road space to reduce the length of the queue as much as possible to do otherwise is stupid, why cause longer tailbacks than are necessary? But then I only drive, I'm not a "professional" road planner, if that's not an oxymoron scrapping the lane is only going to cost money (Around £400k). At this time that is money wasted which could be spent on other minor junction improvements.

I hadn't heard that one because I never drive the M3 on that part but surely it cannot retain motorway status if it's single lane?
