Does anyone know of an acre of land/have an acre of land they would be willing to rent out in the Reading/within 12 miles of area? It would need good grass and to be fenced off. It would be for a foal. Cheers.
Cas - what's going on here! Decent transport doesn't eat grass Edited by Cas_P on Saturday 7th August 21:27

Ive got a few acres but guildford is probably too far for you!
It is a little bit far, I used to go climbing at craggy, can't remember how long it took to get there though. How much would you want? I'd only need about an acre, think I'd die poo picking 3 acres on a cold morning lol!
Does it have any accessible shelter? EFA: By shelter I'd also class tree's any sort of shaded area.

Are you going to keep it on its own? Not very fair for it as they are such social animals. Wouldn't it be better to find someone with other youngstock that it can run with?
Horses are absolutely fine alone if cared for properly and interacted with enough. It's not 'unfair' whatsoever, Unfair is people who get a horse, turn it out and Forget about it. You'll findmany places offer individual turnout. The colt would have daily interaction and be well looked after. However I will probably have a broken in horse also that I can ride in the meantime.

If we all did what was best for the horses, stable builders would all be looking for a new career!

animals and, IMO, should never be
isolated from other equines. Many
places do offer individual turnout, but
only because that's what their owners
think they need - to protect them from
getting kicked, so that they are
always available to ride..

So it makes it unfair? I know the history of horses. I've learnt a lot from my mom. All I didn't agree with in the post was that it was unfair. He'd be extremely well looked after and interacted with. Turnout without a high level of interaction would be un fair yes but with how I'd be it wouldn't. However this doesn't matter because as I said I'd have a riding horse he'd be turned out with.
I think you're going to need quite a bit more than an acre then...
Originally it would be 1 acre for one foal when I put the thread up it was only recently that I decided I'd want a riding horse too however I'm happy with the horse I ride currently on part loan. So, poppet, here's an idea I know what I'm doing and I know that any horse I have will be treated very
well.though if I had just the one as originally wanted I'd need 2 for rotation. When I sort it all out you can
bring your obvious expertise and see
for yourself, ok

Had you been nearer, I was going to offer you some grazing with a field shelter to keep one of my horses company (I have an odd number and like to try and maintain 'pairs'), but I've changed my mind now anyway...
I do hope that you will think very carefully about what you are doing, though - a foal should never grow up away from other horses, and if it isn't their own Mum, as many as possible if you ever want to be able to take it to show: Horses need socialising as well as children and dogs!

I also know a LOT of men who know a LOT about horses, never once did I insinuate they didn't. You could be male/female/alien, hell, a bloody hippo, my response would be the same

Bloody hell - I know what they mean by the 'mental' on here now!
Considering that you were the one asking a huge favour in the first place - nice attitude
Not really an attitude just a response to your post, which was also had a sense of rudeness in it. And I wasn't asking for a favour I'd be paying for it. So in a way someone would get paid

for letting me use something they don't use
.Regarding 'mental'... Hmm hardly. Now will that be the end of it or are you going to carry on being rude and obnoxious. I assume the latter, please prove me wrong as I find this all very tedious.
Cas, it actually wasn't me that said it was 'unfair'...
However, I love animals (much more than most people actually) and I would say exactly the same thing to my best friend...It's not personal and I don't mean to be rude: I just don't agree with keeping horses in a small paddock (or stables) for the owner's convenience... I know you were only joking about poo-picking 3 acres on a cold morning, but IMO people who aren't prepared to put in the extra work / money required to give a horse the best possible life in captivity, shouldn't have one.
You may disagree, but I think horses should always be kept in pairs and the first pair should have a minimum of four acres to live on, ideally with some variety in the terrain, with at least another acre for every additional horse: OK, so they can survive on less, and it is a lot cheaper and more convenient for the owner to have less, but I'm not so sure they will have a happy life that way?

An acre for a foal is more than adequate as long as you have another for rotation to keep the grass fresh etc (I didn't put that in my original post as I didn't think of rotation it until after and by then it was clear no one near had any land anyway so I didn't edit it). I can promise you that any horse/s I keep will have the best care I can give. On top of that I have amazing guidance from my mom whose life used to literally revolve around her horses, hell she used to jump on bareback and canter over the field to school when she was a kid and is a BHSAI, even wrote a series of course books teaching people everything they needed to know to do the BHS tests, lived for her showjumping also so for one, she'd give me a hell of a bHowever, I love animals (much more than most people actually) and I would say exactly the same thing to my best friend...It's not personal and I don't mean to be rude: I just don't agree with keeping horses in a small paddock (or stables) for the owner's convenience... king if she didn't think the horses were 100% happy and looked after
I know horses can be happy along as long as they are well looked after as I've seen on many occasions however, in hindsight I will be getting a riding horse also so he will have a friend. Anyway, it seems hard to find land in this area at the moment and one guy I asked wanted £35 p/w for turnout only for 2 acres with no shelter which was ridiculous so I'm going to hold fire for a bit. I've got a part loan that I'm quite happy with in Ascot/Windsor and I'm helping out with a lovely shire and a little shetty in Pangbourne so as you can tell, I love them too, even if Smudge was a bit of a cow this morning and didn't want to be ridden because she wanted to be out in her field, she was ace after though!
How many do you have? do you do competitions etc?
