Am i mad for considering a high miler 5 series

I have been looking at a few 5 series over the past week..

I am looking for a car for my better half to use as the kids run about. Will also double up for me for travelling to work etc

Our original choice is a Subaru Legacy Spec B. But around the same money i can get a 5 series, but with high milage

Been looking at one like below

My head is saying 5 series but could be expensive come service.. My heart is saying Legacy..

I should be changing my Volvo for a Subaru Tribeca in a few weeks, and also will be buying another Impreza when i come back from my hols.

So the choice is a Legacy or a BArgain German Barge 5 Series or 7 series.

Now open to the floor for suggestions

I have already stuck a deposit dwn n a Tribeca.. Which has the same engine as the Legacy.. 3.0 H6.. No More than 20mpg, but my xc90 is only managing 25mpg and thats a diesel!

Really love my Legacy but it is pretty ludicrous on fuel when you take a step back and look at it objectively. Many diesels are just as quick now and probably do double the mpg. Really depends on what sort of mileage the car will all do, can't help but think that having one fairly frugal car is the sane choice these days.... riduculous thing for me now is that I am tooling around most days in my 110 Defender, not only cos I love pottering around in it (for short runs at least) but it is proving hugely more frugal

Cheers TC. The Tribeca will be no do no more than 5000 mile per year.. The wifes car will be less than 3000 per year. So milage is not really an issue thankfully. Our current family car has only done 1800 miles since December.. And that is our only car at the moment.

I roughly know how much a legacy costs to run, but i am concerned that a high miler BM will have things to fix soon and will probably cost a fair bit of cash..

Why pay the premium for the diesel if you're only going to do 3000 - 5000 miles a year. Go for a 525 or a 530. You'll enjoy it much more.

Just any older large diesel car really. You're going to pay over the odds for the diesel and to be honest those big diesels aren't all that fuel efficient anyway. Just a couple of examples without trying to hard. Negotiate hard on the second...

On that mileage yes!

I doing 26000 a year in the the 330Ci till I get my Diesel sorted.


Great car 30ish mpg too!
