Hi folks, can I please pick the brain of the collective?

My friend has a 2002 TT quattro that needs a new slave cylinder. The thing only costs £60 but she's been charged £1200 for labour - 10 hours at £120 an hour. Is that right?

If it's the clutch (as in release bearing) the labour is horrendous and if that's a main dealer I'd not be surprised at the quote.[/footnote]

Sounds very expensive indeed.

Drop Dr G a PM as he should be able to give you a good idea of how much this type of job would cost.

Alternatively, give Ian from Seaspray Motors a call on 01895 81390. They specialise in VAG cars.

It's a subframe / gearbox off job and is horrible, also makes no sense not to deal with the clutch / flywheel while you're there (so I hope they haven't done it yet). At £120 an hour or whatever at a main dealer I'm surprised it's not more to be honest.

ETA: It is at a main dealer so I'm not surprised at all, I think the book time is somewhere upwards of 6-8 hours to do it right. When I had the clutch / flywheel done Phil commented on it being a bit of a pain!

Thanks for your help, all. I think she's just going to do the bare minimum as she's probably going to sell it. It was high mileage when she got it and it's at 90k now.

Oh and thanks to the mods for replacing the title that the iPnone ate

She's potentially being rather mean to the new owner of the car if she is going to do that. If it's on the original clutch at 90k no decent garage would let her pay for all the labour without doing the clutch as well.

I've remembered why Audi will be so high as well, because their book time just for full wheel allignment is 3 hours from memory so you soon get to 10.

Just had a new engine & other parts turbo, intercoolers etc etc, under warranty on my espace (2.2 dci) and the main dealer charges £1k to remove and £1k to refit total bill just under £8k!!! Just pleased I wasn't paying!

Very possibly being mean to the future owner, but she's spent £3k on it in the last 4 months. And yes, it's expensive being a main dealer, but if they're a decent outfit (main dealer in Guildford and all that) then I'm surprised they haven't already mentioned the clutch.

The thing that made her think she was being done is that when she expressed surprise at the cost, the guy told her to call back tomorrow and he'd "see what he can do". Just wondered if they're just trying to price it at as much as she can pay... Ah well.

Oddly enough I'm at Seaspray now and just had a word with one of the lads and their book figure is 6 1/2 hours and I think they charge £45 an hour.

Apparently a ball ache of a job but can be done for alot less than £1200!

This is because it's a main dealer and they're trying to take the piss, if he was being nice he could have pointed out they do a discount on labour (most do anyway) for cars over 5 years old so they should be able to do a lot better than £120 an hour but still nothing like what rob said above.

Update: she's managed to find an Audi specialist in Guildford that'll do it for £600 including the clutch. Rob/Steve - thanks very much If this other place turns out to be below par I'll send her in your mates' directions.
