I just got back from some wonderful beaches in Pembrokeshire, and I've also seen equally lovely beaches in Cornwall, Devon & Dorset amongst other places.

Does anyone know if we have any in the South East - Sussex, Kent, Hampshire?

Ideally a combination of sand, cliffs & rock pools. Even more ideally, relatively quiet - not somewhere lined with Fish & Chip shops and amusement arcades.

Have you considered the Isle of Wight? (Pretty close to Hampshire wink)
Some nice beeches over there and a good place for collecting fossils if that's your thing.
Quiet and relatively free from chavs and kiss me quick hats.

West Wittering is rather nice. Just south of Chichester.

That does look rather nice. smile

Google Maps is on drugs though, if it thinks it's going to take me 1hr 45 minutes to get there!! It's only 60 miles!

Minor hijack, but has anyone camped in West Wittering? Area was also recommended to me by a mate at work, and girlfriend fancies getting away for a weekend to test out a new tent before Reading Festival.

Googling shows plenty of sites, but don't really know what separates a good site from a rubbish one! Location, facilities, price, size? Think it's well over 20 years since I last went camping (apart from festivals, Le Mans and *ahem* Duke of Edinburgh).

Cheers!

Given that the kids tend to wake us up by 5:30, I'd hope to be able to beat the queue. smile There's got to be some upside! hehe

Most of Sussex & Kent coastline is pebble beach. Cliffs you can get
from Seaford to Eastbourne.

I usually recommend, west to east, Selsey, Climping, Birling Gap,
Norman's Bay, Fairlight Cove, Camber Sands.

All of them are quiet, verging on seriously quiet / no facilities.

We used to have a caravan on Scotts Farm (Proper pikey I know.) Great location, 5 minute walk to the shops, pub, and the pebble beach. The sandy beach was about a 5 minute drive.

The campsite was always packed so I presume the facilities were more than adequate. smile

Cheers for those!

From a quick look on Google images, I'd say Fairlight Cove looks like it's probably the pick of the bunch.

Chris, Cooden is pretty good too. Park in Beaulieu Road and stroll down to the beach. Sandy at low tide and usually pretty quiet. You can also have a pint afterwards in the Cooden Beach Hotel just round the corner.

You should try Ferring near West Worthing. Although it doesn't have the cliffs and rock pools, but is quiet on your average day. Be warned, it can be absoultely PACKED on a nice sunny day. The bluebird café (if you head west) has a few hottie who work there aswell biggrin

The place is BRILLIANT for dogs though smile Enjoy.

Holy thread revival!

Any updates on these recommendations... fourteen years on? I imagine that West Wittering isn't as quiet any longer? Is it still uncrowded due to the pre-booked/finite parking and are there any other hidden gems with facilities such as loo and food/drink?

I was there last Saturday and it was surprisingly busy. Certainly hundreds of cars in the car park
at £10.50 - £14 a go for the full day.

On this basis, I'd avoid it if you can on the six weekends of the kids summer holidays.
You'll do more queueing than sitting on the beach, I suspect.

Same as Camber Sands & Brighton. Hundreds of cars in traffic jams on those six weekends
because folks decide they want a day on the beach.

Thanks dcb. I thought that the 'pre-booked' element might taper the influx.

I've also been looking at Sandbanks too, as it's also an easy drive from SW20 and seems to have decent parking and a Rick Stein's for breakfast.

By what time would you suggest that arrival is necessary to get a parking spot in these places... 9am?

Sandbanks ?! Eek.

I am more of a Spoons man myself, but since you are coming from SW20, you'll probably
like Sandbanks. Reliably upmarket. It is two hours from SW20, so way way more driving than I'd
be comfortable with for a day trip. One hour maximum for me, especially with a couple
of under 5s in the back.

FYI, Climping is only 1 hour 20 from SW20. Parking is cheaper and there is nothing
but parking, beach, food and toilets, so there is nothing else that the kids can demand you spend money on.
The beach is gently sloping, so it's warmer and safer to swim in too.

Earlier than that, I'd have thought, but I wouldn't dream of paying those car parking prices anyway.
Free parking in the street for me. If there's a 10 minute walk to the beach, so much the better.
