Am thinking of chopping the old daily snotter in for a Smart ForTwo. Currently do Fleet to Redhill each day which is costing me £120 a week in fuel. Could get the new Smart diesel hybrid thing for £110 a month and then with less fuel bills each month I could get a better toy. But how would I cope with the journey each day???

Whatdoyathink??

Trouble is it'd take you twice as long to get to work and home again, so you'd have no time to enjoy the toy...

Can't say it sounds like great move imo. Although it would be funny to see one in the middle of the pack on a hoon laugh

as my journey involves doing a max of 30mph on the m3 at the moment it wouldn't really matter too much about speed. When I get on the m25 I just cruise at 70 before coming to a standstill at Reigate hill again. I had one when I was in Majorca last year and must have put about 500miles on it in the week, but obviously this is slightly different wobble

Think I may see if I can get a 24hr test drive and use it like my commute for the day. And to see the fuel savings...

I thought any two seater was welcome on a hoon???

You should ask TC his thoughts. He has the Cerb, the Subaru, and a Smart.

Buy a Mondeo tdi or 320 tdi for less than the smart and get great fuel, good price and a better car

cbt = £125
Scooter = £2000
Gear = £500

Cruising past stationary cars on the commute; Priceless

Yep although strictly speaking the Smart is not mine but Mrs Cloth's, also it's the roadster rather than the Fortwo so a bit different - she uses hers 4 days a week to commute from Maidenhead to Kingston which is about 30 miles each way, not quite upto what you will be doing but not bad - reports from the front line are that she loves the little thing and has no beef with commuting that kind of distance in it. I steal it every know and again and have to say it is mucho fun, like a little go kart.

Oh and whilst we are posting pics

Do you get used to the gearchange on them??

I would go for something like that normally, but brand new is too cheap to resist with high mpg.

Never had a problem with the gearchange myself and don't really see what the beef is about, sure it's not as "good" as a proper manual if you want to really drive it but it's fine day to day. Mrs C just keeps it in auto anyway and tootles along, if you've got slow moving or stop start traffic to contend with then it's actually pretty useful.

Right I've sent off for a test drive. Definately need it for 24hrs to see how I get on with a longish journey - have got to go to Gatwick on Tuesday to pick up a mate so it's vitually the same as going to work in Redhill.

Got rid of the RR super last week. Can you think of anything more different???

Hope you didn't think "go kart" applied to the forTwo though smile They lean and understeer like hell, unlike the Roadster. Can't get Roadsters new though if thats what you're after as they went out of production 2 years ago.

I have a good friend who bought one specifically to drive around town, and gets more than double the economy on his 528i.

He paid £3,500 for it, under 60k mileage, 5 years old, a real bargain I think. He barely drives the 528 now as a result. He got the soft top version too so he can't wait for the weather.

We are thinking about getting one as a pool car ... quirky.

My roadster was the best car I've owned to go full chat all under the speed limit. Gear change you learn to love and the cheeky sound of it is addictive!!!

Had to get rid coz the G/F told me I looked too gay in it...frown

Well I've got this for the next 24hrs. Will be trying it on my commute tomorrow. First impressions are the gearbox is actually a lot better than it used to be.
