Ah ok, thanks. Nathan has Cobra radios too, although they're a different version.

I nearly got some really expensive ones (have a look at motorola if bored) that actually do work over long range but then thought it's very rare you actually need it, they seemed to be the best compromise!

I have four Motorola ones for use on sites.
Look a bit like police - security radios.
12 channel with remote head set if required.
Work well in tunnels and difficult access location about 1 mile open range.
EX rated, the downside thay cost near £400 each

Are the ones you guys looking for able to call each other or are they only paired up for PTT operation at time of purchase?

These PMR ones work by channel (5 channels with sub channels) so you can use as many as you like together and the ones I linked to actually work (and consistently)!

I've got these.

They worked reasonably well on the icy hoon. There's also a WT87 for an extra tenner that's supposed to be longer range.

silly question maybe but that's never stopped me wink

would the ones from maplin compatible with the more expensive motorola ones? or would all the people in the group have to have the same ones to work together?

thankyou in advance

As long as they are 'PMR' 2 way radios you'll be able to hear/speak to everyone else

Private Mobile Radio (PMR)
Spoke to my supplier today and he says the only way you can talk as a group is the have all set on same TX & RX channels, just beacuse you have them all set on say #2 does not mean the freq is the same on all sets.

Worth checking before launch

Sounds like someone should decide on a channel, and then I can go and read the instruction book on how to change mine before the weekend laugh

Sounds obvious but if buying new radios, get ones which have rechargeable battery packs and chargers, otherwise they eat normal batteries, well ours do anyway (think they're binatone ones)
