It was on the last episode of top gear, just wondering if cars can drive around it?

Airport biglaugh That's the disused Greenham Common USAF base! I'd be careful if you're planning to land there, I think the runway has obstructions on it and you'll struggle to get out through the razor-wire! smile

The runway is closed to the public.

I work in New Greenham Park, the industrial estate where the Air Force Buildings used to be. As far as I know, there's no way onto the airfield, and the actual runway was torn up and used to make the Newbury bypass.

If driving round airfields is your thing, you could always do the Top Gear race track at Dunsfold. Plans Motorsport, who maintain my car, sent this info if you're interested.

That looks very good actually. I like how you get the track to yourself and an instructor. I was trying to find something like this to learn the limits of my car in a safe environment, but hadn't found anywhere before.

I assume you recommend them if you get your car done there?

Yeah exactly, i'll just watch out for those abrasive bits of concrete if I value my tyres.

Cheers for the good advice last night Pete. May try and get some braided lines fitted soon and see if that improves the brakes.

Thanks, I'd love to learn how to fit this stuff, so I'll probably get in touch about it in the new year once I can see how much money I've got after Xmas (everyone's back from uni, so should be fun).

If the "near Newbury" aspect is important, Motorsport Events do track days at Abingdon Airfield. You can see the airfield from the A34.

I bet it still rips your tyres up.

I fly over Newbury regularly, and it's one of my favourite flights if I have a passenger up for a pleasure flight. Although the airfield appears quite 'visible' I would only attempt to put down there in the event of an engine failure!
