Dave,
I've bought a few cars from the auction in the past and to be honest, it's always worked out well for me and you actually get more protection than buying privately as there is a warranty, albeit a day.
Some simple advice is:
1. Get there early and have a good look round while the guys are preparing the cars. Will give you an opportunity to have a look inside and under the bonnet.
2. If there's something that takes your fancy, keep an eye on it when it's started up to be driven into the hall looking for any excessive smoking, dodgy sounds when cold etc. Get them to flip the bonnet - check the general condition thereunder and have a quick look at the oil filler cap for sludge and how good the oil is. Check the shut lines to make sure they're all even.
3. As with any auction, know what the cars are worth beforehand and set your limit. It's very easy to get carried away and pay over the odds.
4. As soon as you've got it, have someone experienced have a good look at it and drive it straight back if it's a pup.

Thanks Lake lord !
Could be a fun day out, I think I may visit one to see the score, tyoe of stock etc and then once the Auidi's gone see if I can find what I want, which is a Black, 320D Touring M-Sport with Leather, HID, 6 speed box, later larger inlet. and options

I would add that a while before anything you fancy goes through, go up to the side of the auctioneers rostrum & ask to see the paperwork for 'your' car, there can be loads of extra service info & previous owners details & even the V5 although the windscreen info says its not with it.I've bought a few cars from the auction in the past and to be honest, it's always worked out well for me and you actually get more protection than buying privately as there is a warranty, albeit a day.

Also if it dose not reach reserve & is being sold by a group find out if a rep. is on site , you could then negotiate directly & come to a deal.
I've had some great cars from Blackbush & also seen some nearly new horrors go through.
