What can I get with a serious engine for less than 2K?

A mate of mine has just bougth a flat and doesn't need a car to get to work any more, and he's just sent me this in an e-mail:

"Okay… since I don’t really drive much anymore because of where I’m living, fuel consumption doesn’t really concern me.
What can I get with a serious engine for less than 2K? Not concerned about reliability or mileage, just want something that’s fun when I do."

Any suggestions? And no, i'm not including silver Alfas in this conversation

If its engine more than handling, how about big engined XJS, or might get a cheap Tivver (wedge or an S) for that.

I'm lovin that 4 litre 5 series - mindblowing value for money. Prolly not the best 'fun' car though. For fun it would have to be a 172.

I've seen MR2 turbos/Supra turbos, GTI-Rs, 300ZX, etc for less than 2 bags of sand. All probably only a few miles away from total and catastrophic engine failure. Still they'd be fun, in a masochistic way
