....and add a few grand, what could I get as a daily snotter. Budget therefore around £6k which given the kids and the dog tend to trash our cars is about as much as I want to go to (that and I'm poor and tight hehe).

Tempted by so far:

C43 AMG Merc estate

Would be around a year 2000 which is good for the old road tax as on the old system. Bad points, er not many they rust a bit, it's reasonably old shape now but 300bhp and a V8.

A4 Avant 3.0 Sport

Just spotted an 02 year one of these on AT for about £5.5 - it's the B6 shape I think they call it and looks quite a bit newer than the Merc above. Downside is it won't be as quick but a bit more sensible maybe as a purchase, however will be in the bd level tax (assuming it does come into force). I suspect it's a wee bit dull a choice.

Landy Defender 110

Really miss my old bus that I had to sell and thinking about buying a newer one an trying it as our main car - we don't do mega miles week in week out but do have the occasional trip up north to family. Downsides is £6k don't get you much defender so will be mid 90's and leggy (i.e prolly not as pretty as the pic I have chosen). But I do love em and they are great for just chucking kids bikes and all sorts into.

Any other suggestions, today a defender is top of my list but yesterday it was the Merc. banghead Oh and for those that don't know me, whatever we get is flanked by 2 other cars, my Cerb and the wifes Smart Roadster. Or I could just run the Alfa into the ground seeing that old thing simply refuses to be unreliable, is a known quantity and is quite fun to throw around.

Can't get an E55 estate within budget (and needs to be an estate due to hound). Also it's a bit of a barge in comparison (I know that doesn't make sense when I am looking at Defenders, but in my head it makes sense).

Get the landy, the Merc is dull and that Audi will be slow and dull.

Deffo the landy. We used to have a disco, and when we took it to the local offroad place, we were amazing about how capable it was! The Defender's are even better. Brilliant cars.

Any other preferences? Mileage? Manual/Auto? Petrol/Diesel?

No real preferences on anything, I guess rather not a diesel if it's a car but ok in the landy obviously. Mileage not a huge issue but I guess rather keep it south of 100k. A 5 series is really a bit of a no brainer in many ways I do agree, sadly I have had an E39 before (albeit not a fruity one) but I still don't have a great desire to get another one for some reason.

Keep the Alfa but failing that, get the landy.

Loads of options!

Lexus IS 3.0 Sport Estate? (only think they came as an Auto though...)

Subaru Legacy B4 2.0 Twin Turbo 4x4? Or even the GT?: http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/SUBA...

VW Passat V6 4Motion?

BMW 330i Sport?

Dare I say it... Mondeo ST220 or GhiaX 3.0 V6? (they're actually bloody comfortable, well spec'd and fairly rapid for an estate...)

Landy Discovery is a bit more comfy than a Defender? There's a few V8 LPG's around for that money too...

Shogun? http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/MITS...

Or the Shogun Sport? http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/MITS...

Volvo V70 T5? or the V90 24V?

Yep auto only and pretty slow (as slow as my dad's GS300).

330 is a good shout I reckon, as was the suggestion of a 5series with a big engine!

e34 M5 touring? hehe

As another thought (and to try and stop the BMW Fan Club running away with it againwink) how about an Audi S4 2.7TT Avant?

Original shape S4 has triggered on the radar I must admit although these hot Audi's don't have seem tetchywink, might have to have a go in one however - Subaru Legacy also been on the list a few times, just the interiors are a bit Japanese (that and the fact the Charlie has one which automatically means it must be a bad choice). Finally E34 M5, would love one but not sure I would want to subject a rare old girl like that to the horrors of my family, plus they are LHD which pretty much means my wife will say no as she won't want to drive it (and she will need to, to the shopping and suchlike).
