Eurofest at Castle Combe
Discussion
the thing with Combe is that it doesnt have long run-offs like a lot of circuits... so if you get it wrong at a high speed section, it can end painfully.
As Rob says, its usually Quarry that catches people out - the crest unsettles the car and can cause accidents...
I've been a passenger in a car going over that crest into a traffic jam! how the driver avoided the car park because of someone spinning out on the exit blocking the majority of the track still is beyond me!

That sounds scary! I should imagine that it is a fairly common occurane though.
The 3 sessions I did at combe were relatively relaxed but that was due to having all of 5-8 cars out on the track at the same time as me.
Hm I know what you mean about Quarry !
Great track to drive though. didn't find it all that fun at the spring action day. I think I stayed at a steady 70 all the way round. I have never seen so much water. The heros diving ito the bends 3 abreast was enough to put me off.
Anyway.

Most memorable was when I saw a brand new Impreza STi come over Avon Rise with too much speed on and braked just before the Apex at Quarry... Ended up backwards into the tyre wall and you saw (and heard!) the chassis break as he went in! And within seconds of him limping away just about under his own power, a Skyline did exactly the same thing, only sideways into the wall rather than backwards - he had to be recovered though because his car was well and truly buggered! john_r said:

A couple of friends turned up to a track day at combe on the 19th of April (I think the same one you were at Phil) and I was horrified to hear some of the stories such as overtaking/undertaking on corners, contests to see who can outbrake who, etc..
Nice quite track days suit me, much like the one the SASers are on as we type.
Did my first ever track day at Combe a few years ago, when my saab was mostly stock. Was the Performance car action day in April. See photo.
Ever since i've been hooked - though now we have a track sg, not our daily drivers. Have done a gearbox (as modded 900T's do) and a H/G at various track days, so happy to abuse something that isn't my pride and joy nor something i rely on.
Problem with Eurofest/PCAD is that there are often too many on track. We tend to go out in big saab groups so we can hunt in numbers! Certainly it can get pretty interesting in the afternoon when there is some shocking driving.
If anyone else is there, look out for a silver/blue Saab 9000T with WMSS (west Midlands Saab specialists) livery.

I'll never do an 'action day' at Combe after going out on track with friends during one and witnessing the antics you describe Rob. Was lethal out there. Amazing considering the reputation Combe has, you'd think it was dangerous enough already!
And yes, in comparison the day at Keevil on Monday was bliss by comparison!
Perhaps almost little too quiet though. I rarely came across another car on the circuit when on a hot lap all day, it would have been nice to have a little play every now and again
