Suggestions for new car
Discussion
Hi all,
OK, the Z will be collected later this month so it's time to start looking at new cars.
Budget is up to about £15/20k.
I'm only doing about 10k miles a year.
Performance a must.
No preference on body style.
I've been looking at a year 2001 M5 (the 5.0V8 model) for something different that I might actually be able to fit a case in.
The alternative is to buy a cheaper runabout (540i...?) and a silly toy for the weekends / track days.
I'm going through the usual anguish of wanting to buy each and every car I think of so any help (and advice on 'duff' cars if they're known to be trouble models) much appreciated.
Cheers,
Neil

Both great suggestions from John and Dave I reckon. I'm also a great lover of the E39 M5 but they arean't without there problems either so make sure you have bought one post engine rebuild. (ok thats a little unfair, but there have been a few cases of this engine developing vanos issues when cost a fortune).
Neil, why not try and buy an RS6? I know of one model inparticular thats had quite a few problems so I reckon he will sell it on cheap!
Have you considered a 911? I know it's pushing it abit with the budget but they are great fun and reliable as everyday cars.

OK, so test drove an M3 and M5 at IMC in Reading this weekend but just not sure about the running costs (there's a lot of talk about VANOS and other things I just don't want to understand )
Also went to see a number of fun cars but as usual, my lack of mechanical skills means I would have to have an AA inspection on any I like.
This is not getting any easier....Dave, I may have to take you up on the 540i test drive but the Chim wouldn't really be a fair reflection of the car I could end up with - unless it startles me into going the blower route as well

Take a look at the M5 for £9k in the classifieds looks yummy and who cares it's a 1999, loads of money for fuel, job done.
Or a Cerb, M3, RS4, V8 S4, Skyline, M coupe, Z4, Corvette, Monaro, VX220T, AMG V8 of some sort, I could go on for quite a while
M5 looks nice, spend a couple of grand on LPG conversion and Bobs your uncle. Or a Cerb, M3, RS4, V8 S4, Skyline, M coupe, Z4, Corvette, Monaro, VX220T, AMG V8 of some sort, I could go on for quite a while

Stonking value for money... with a years warranty from Audi and about £600 a year warranty thereafter.
Manuals are easy to find too, and are a bit cheaper me thinks?

Think I might talk the GF into looking at an estate version - she wants an automatic with a big boot for the dog!

And...
This one has all the extras, but is a manual. Just tell the GF it has enough torque to drive everywhere in third gear! No pics, but it's only in Walton on Thames...

...going from a z to an S4??????!!!!!
That has certainly ticked the box for 'No preference on body style' eh as style is not an option on this one?!
...dear oh dear - what a way to honour the soon to be memory of the Z. You may as well go for the Avant and be done with it.
:-)

Ah, but I have the cabriolet which has a 'lot of junk in it's trunk'. That has certainly ticked the box for 'No preference on body style' eh as style is not an option on this one?!

Plus, not so worried about looks to be honest - I just fancy a big change. The z is good but a bit staid after 18 months - the thought of adding a supercharger to spice it up a bit was looked into but at the end of the day, I just can't be bothered
The M3 is still a top runner though but i'm fighting the estate agent connotations on that one.
