Have been using a well established localish Vet practice for about a year now. It's time to get the poor unsuspecting gal fixed as she's over her season. They're after something like £250 all in which seems a bit steep.. is this the norm? Or can anyone recommend me a good place. She's a nervous dog and they treat her well so we're thinking of sticking with them, heck of a fee though

Ed,

We use the vet in Pangbourne and they charged about £220 (Mrs B reliably tells me) for this- it seems that the price is quite dependent on the weight of the dog (apparently)

We're actually looking for somewhere new at the moment- we seem to pay an awful lot at Pangbourne based on what some of our friends are telling us.

Which side of Reading are you? We're looking to our little girlie done too this year so I would be interested in knowing which vets you decide on. I might give our vets a call today to see what they charge.

We're Tilehurst way. We'll prob just stick with our current vet as she gets stressed out quite easily - she's been there a couple of times now & it's been OK.. she shakes a bit & moults but wags soon enough when it's the visits are over.

Yes, MrsB is quite right. I've just phoned my vets and they said they don't have a standard charge for spaying - a vet has to see the dog and give a quote because it all depends on the size and weight (I guess its the same as calculating a person's BMI for anaesthesia purposes...)

We use these guys in Caversham: http://www.activevetcare.co.uk

Not cheap, but they've never put a foot wrong, although only surgery we've seen is the snip.

We use Abbey Vets in London Road - they also have surgeries in Earley and Woodley.

Our dalmatian has been spayed there and had a broken leg fixed when she was a puppy. Both ops went without any problems and follow-up aftercare was good too.

~£200 for the spaying I think and she weighs around 23kg.

I assume you are using the one in Tilehurst already? Thats an Active vetcare "branch" and we've had no problems with them since moving here from Maidenhead.

Although I am not in your area, as a comparison I paid £197 for speying in 2002 and expect to be £240 to £250ish when I have my present bh done after her next season.

actually no, it's one one the way to Reading. They did a grand job ib fact, we also had her chipped whilst she was under (so she's go faster I suppose)
