No it wouldn't - the new regime applies to cars registered after 1st March 2001.. Still a hefty increase for those of us with cars newer than that though, and it does seem to have gone largely unnoticed by the press..

This is just going to encourage people to buy, bigger engined older (pre 2001) cars, seems mad to me if they are trying to cut emissions. So the 2 seater TVR is £200 where as my diesel Espace that carrys 7 people will be £415..... might have to replace it with a Cerb wink

Porker is still £185, going up to £200
130i will be going up to £310

Big deal, we'll be paying £10 a gallon by then anyway so what difference is £100 going to make?

VW Passat: £200

BMW M5: £455 (will be gone (probably))

Land Rover: £455 (no wonder people who live in the country and actually need a 4x4 are a little upset!)

Nissan GTR: £455 (and I get to pay £950 in the first year as a punishment for buying a new car...) furious

And exactly how many cars can I drive AT THE SAME TIME?

The only word that sums up our government is twunts...

The DVLA site suggests that category G is only applicable for cars registered after 23/3/06. Therefore the max is £210 regardless of emmissions for cars registered prior to 23/3/06 - is that right?

Right - I have just read the BBC report on the budget again, and even read the relevent bit of the actual budget report (yawn..). I am of the firm view that only the existing system refers to cars registered after 23/03/06 and that it does **not** apply in the new system that comes in in 2009. In other words, after 2009 **all** cars registered after 1st March 2001 will be in the new tax bands A-M. The DVLA site has not been updated, and only refers to the existing scheme.

Bad news for most 'PH' cars.. frown
