I've done the Drive & Survive course, I found parts of it quite useful. It's run by ex-coppers (or was when I did it) who have a 'real-world' head on them.

If you go in with an open mind and a positive attitude, you may get something from it. Mine included skidpan training and high-speed emergency manoeuvres which I think should be a part of learning to drive, period. Most useful thing I've ever done.

I've done the D&S course quite a few times - I used to work for them.

Where are you going, TRL, Kinetiq or an airfield?

The whole thing is pretty much based on the defensive driver philosophy and supported by "Road Craft". In the past, the set up has indeed been manned by ex BiB, but not exclusively.
The format varies, but is usually a class room based morning session, looking at observation, anticipation hazzard perception. There may be a quiz/obs. test, or a multi guess test.
One of the big issues is speed awareness and suitability of speed.

The afternoon session is usually in your own car, or a coleagues and is often on a 2:1 ratio.

Keep your whits about you during the on road, look out for information on the roads and surroundings etc. They may ask you to do a commentary during your demo drive. Try practicing this, as it can be tough to talk sensible and drive properly at the same time.

I think he has now taken over the facility there that used to be D & S, I havent been there for a couple of years as we now use the Prodrive site nr Kenilworth. On an aside I bought my first Sierra Cosworth from Rob Gravett when he was racing in BTCC.
