Looks nice and a great paint job but as you say, the fact that it registered as CAT D will affect it's sale value. You benefit when you buy it but you have to face the consequence when you sell it on.
As you're planning a straight swap PX, you obviously have in mind what it's worth but as I recall, CAT D's sell for c.20% less than a 'clean' car so that should give you an idea of its worth.
Other than that, you shouldn't be put off. CAT D repairs are normally straight forward and if repaired properly, you'll be getting a bargain.

Its looks to have had a good history and the rebuild to s2 shape spec is all documented. Im thinking a honda s2 is about 16-17k so little less maybe for cat D, still a straight swap seems pretty reasonable and fair I feel. Does seem to have had a lot done, not so sure on the paint scheem, but then a Tuscan was hardly a shrinking violet!

How much did you say your car was worth Alex wasn't it around £16k? I'd say he's getting the better end of the deal yes it's a very nice car, but an S1 elise that's cat D can't be worth very much at all. Then add in your very limited market come resale time and I'm just not sure.

Looks like one hell of a car, but I never liked the look of the S1.

I think your right about the value of the car. He has said this is a value he thinks is acceptable but down to me... Maybe can get some money my way.. He has sent more photos and info on the car and it does sound very sorted and far from a std s1. Many many extra items unique to his car. It has been tracked in the past but this doesn't particularly worry me.

Will have to try some std s1 or s2 like he suggests then check his out and see the difference. Would be worth getting if I was to be having it for 1 yr + but knowing me, would change again next year. So like you say the cat d selling on would lose it money, though he has explained the reason for its cat d. minor clam damage to one front wing, and no part available from lotus and car was in storage, adding up storage costs until it equalled >60 % car value and was written off.

Alex Mr xl here

i would agree with ben and nathan on this and as you say you may want to change it again in 12 months, bear in mind the resale value and the limited market this appeals to.

Also the insurance will be a nightmare as we found when looking for a v6 clio,
don't throw away a good car and money on a cat D.

Ask yourself this....do you need to sell the tusc that badly or can it sit in your garage until a credable car becomes available.

Just my opinion but don't want to see you waste our hard earned taxes oops sorry your wages hehe

I have been thinking the same, why dont I just keep the thing, use it. If it sells it sells if not I will have bloody good summer again in the best car I can think of for 16k..

And the whole cat D thing just sounds awkward.

Insurance can be tough on Cat D cars too and if you were to track it and wanted to cover it with track insurance, i think this might be quite a lot more with a Cat D.

I havent seen your tuscan but i wouldnt swap for that. i like the elise but the pros and cons are heavily in your favour.

Bargepole? Resale would be a nightmare. Nice car, but not for you IMHO.
