good restaurants in the Epsom area

imho Epsom is a bit poor for good restaurants. Plenty of run of the mill jobbies, but nothing massively memorable.
The new-ish Lebanese in Esher is very, very nice. Can't remember the name, but if you're coming down from the A3, turn left at the lights on the High Street, and it's on the right.

nail on head there! One I know that is good in a very old school way is the South hatch on Epsom Downs. It's where Winston Churchill used to stable his horses.
The food is mainly old school British, like spotted dick and custard...
Thai Regional Taste in Cheam is blindingly good food.
Apparently the Rubbing House on the Downs is also good, though booking might be an idea.
A good Italian is Ricci's in Sutton up by the station. Family run affair, good honest food.
There is an excellent chinese place in Banstead (M&S end), but the name illudes me. The season fish is circa £25 (labelled POA), but it is worth every penny. I think that four of us managed to blow over £200 there, oh the joy of expenses which aren't yours ...
If you fancy a good burger place, The American Way has been a regular of mine for 20 years.
If you fancy Singaporean food, then my house is a sure fire winner!

as is the restaurant opposite Pizza Express, although I can't remember the name.
Si There's an Italian in Astead, on the high street, which is good and the Leg of Mutton & Cauliflower were doing good food in their restaurant but I read a review not long ago that said it wasn't so great...perhaps it's changed hands since I last went. The Indian, just around the corner from the pub is also good (can't remember the name, oh, I'm getting like Kermit).

You're right there mate, I was born in Epsom, and I've never found anywhere really good... surprising really considering the demographic and the fact that it won 'best place to live in Britain' a couple of years back...I think it's actually based more on its proximity to everything else. It's got the basic amenities you'd expect in any town of its size, but is, in itself, nothing special. Add on the quick access to London (no mainline station is more than 55 minutes), airports (28 miles each for LHR & LGW), the Surrey Hills, etc, etc and it starts to make more sense. The best comparison I think is with Kingston. It's easy to get into Kingston from Epsom when you want the shops, but you don't have to put up with Kingston traffic all the time, and considering its location, Epsom property is pretty cheap - you can more or less add an extra bedroom to whatever property you buy for the amount you'd spend to live in Kingston.

Tonker, if you want kerwality pub food, the running horses at Mickleham is bloody good. Head south from leatherhead on the a24 and turn off onto the mickleham road. blink and youve missed it but sat nav is your friend.

I'm not so sure anymore. Half a mill for a 3bed semi, in some parts even more. I'd say Epsom pricing is far too inflated. Although I think Epsom Downs is still very good value for money.
Hmm... I started out thinking you'd taken leave of your senses, so went for a browse on Rightmove..... When did prices suddenly rocket like that???
We paid £265k for our place less than 2.5 years ago, and last time I looked, which can't have been more than 6 months ago, near enough identical houses (same room sizes etc) were going for around £300k to £310k. Now they all seem to be asking around £360k+?? I thought the housing market was supposed to have slowed down in the last few months?

I live in West Ewell.
Ditto ... small place West Ewell ... haven't seen your estate around though!West Ewell is pretty good for pricing of houses, best locally for sure, in terms of where you would actually want to live!
There are some quite nice houses up by the station, bit out of my range though at the moment!
