Its the wifes birthday on Sat and her brother wants to bring her mum down to go for a meal so he wants to meet somewhere for a pub lunch. He will be comming down the M40 and I was thinking that there must be some nice pubs around High Wycombe / Marlow / Henley. The wife eats a lot if fish and seafood so somewhere thats good for that would be appreciated.

Anyone got any recomendations? Many thanks,

Jon

Here you go: Ye olde worlde pub.

They even have a cottage you can rent if things get frisky

If you come off at jc5, then take the A40 West for less then a mile, turn South and head through Christmas Common (the first part of this road is a long obscenely fast bend due to being rebuilt). At the end of the road, turn left on to the B480 and you'll soon be there.

It closes for the afternoon though at 14.30 or 15.00

How can you resist carrying on down Aston Hill? It's great, preferably coming up. My Westfield goes very nicely around those curves. BTW, the pub looks good if a bit dear. Must try it sometime though. What beers does it have on tap? Rumour has it that the car park at the nature reserve before the M40 bridge is a dogging venue.

Funny that, I always turn left to Maidensgrove to one of my favourite country pubs, The Three Horseshoes. It has a great menue of decent enlish stuff like stilton soup and kidneys, steak etc. and in the summer there is a nice small garden overlooking the valley. Rich...

Or the Hinds Head is meant to be an affordable alternative (with same Big Cheese).

Yup we've eaten at both and they are both very good - Fat Duck is outstanding as an all night experience, Hinds Head is a pub with food that matches most good restaurants.

I live on a couple of mins away from the Hinds Head. Not been in there since Heston Blumenthal took it over a year ago, I will give it a try but I've also heard so 'iffy' reports locally. Rich...

The Star Inn in Waltham St Lawrence does some excellent food although you might want to book ahead for Saturday.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll let you know where we decide and what the food is like. The Loch Fyne does have a great fish menu so that my well be the first choice.

Thanks again,

Jon

Well the best laid plans and all that!

Ended up going to Kew Gardens to Ice Skate with my mother and boyfriend instead!

I will use your suggestions later though as we will reschedule the visit of her brother. So many thanks again to all those who responded,

Very good steak restaurant on the other side of the Green at Kew - called imaginatively the 'Kew Grill'. Owned by that small bushy celebrity chef who's name escapes me right now.

Steaks are so good you don't need a steak knife

That's because on country lanes at junctions it considers all roads to be equal.

TomTom I'm guessing?

It sure is a great pub, absolutely fantastic in the summer!

That's the thing the lane had NO turnings or even footpaths off of it.
I use NavMan

I will definitely be going back again
