Surrey CC are at it again - this time proposing to reduce the A30 speed limit from 50 to 40 between Sunningdale and Bagshot. They also want to reduce the speed in Bagshot itself from 40mph to 30mph for a distance of 1.5km.

The A30 in this area used to be 60mph, which was entirely suitable apart from times when the road was especially busy. But some years ago, the speed limit was dropped to 50. Traffic volumes have since increased to a point where it's often filled with 38mph-everywhere drivers, but at least you can overtake them and make progress. If SurreyCC go ahead with these proposals, it's going to make it impossible to get past these crawling roadblocks legally.

I would urge you all to object to these proposals. The public consultation closes on the 24th May:

Fairly sure similar has been proposed along the stretch of A30 from Bagshot to Camberley town centre, whereby the current 50 sections become 40 and the bit on the Jolly Farmer to Collingwood / fire station becomes 30. I'm sure there is / was a proposal to drop the Maultway section that runs to the Red Road to 40 as well as i seem to remember them pushing that before.

Not surprised as i think those limit drops were originally proposed a couple of years back maybe '19, but obviously everything got sidelined once the Pandemic kicked off and nothing came of it - so i guess now's the time to get it going again.

Edit - given a number of other speed limit reviews currently being proposed around the wider area of Surrey / Hants, etc, i would imagine even if there was a large opposal to plans, they'll still go through anyway as a lot of the schemes will be tied to getting funding from central government - similar to introduction of the low traffic areas, cycle routes, etc, seen over previous years. Fairly sure the A31 has already been earmarked / proposed for a consistent 50 stretch all the way from the A331 junction through Farnham and a distance beyond with average speed cam enforcement.

Objected. Thanks for the link. As usual I had no idea this was even being proposed.

I only found out yesterday when I noticed small yellow signs on some of the speed limit poles mentioning speed limit change proposal. And I knew it wasn't going to be an increase!

Probably. but if it goes through and you didn't lift a finger to object, then you'll feel even more annoyed. Or at least that's how it is for me.

I couldn't find the original link but found this one covering the direct Farnham bypass area part of the consultation (from the same website in the OP) from a couple of months back.

https://www.surreysays.co.uk/environment-and-infra...

On a side note, i also found this courtesy of a Google search of the above, which covers other plans for Farnham including 20mph limits in some centre & residential areas, other speed reduction consultations in the future for safety and environmental concerns, but at least they're finally sorting out the roundabout near Sainsbury's.

This fking country. Are we really seeing hundreds and hundreds of deaths on all of these roads every single day that means we have no choice but to turn the entire road network into a procession of 50 mph average speed zombies?!
It really doesn't feel too long until it's 20mph in every single place that can even see a house, and everywhere else is 50mph average speed and enjoyment from driving is simply a story we tell our grandchildren.

I feel exactly the same. If only there was a motorists lobby that wasn't as invisible as the ABD. I get the impression that it's practically a one-man operation. I wish we had a much more French attitude to silly speed limits and the proliferation of cameras and we actually protested against them rather than meekly grumbling about them on internet forums. I make sure to tell my county councillors that I will be actively voting against anyone who proposes or endorses more restrictions on motorists. I have no issues with low speed limits outside schools or in tight residential areas when there are likely to be children present, but blanket 20mph zones "to encourage walking and cycling" are not what people want. If our journeys are easily walkable or cyclable, then I will walk or cycle. But if I need to move heavy or bulky items or I'm going to play golf or go shooting, then those things can't be done via walking, cycling or public transport.

Following on from the above, drove home this morning down the A30 for the first time in a couple of weeks.

From the top of the hill at Egham, just past the lights at Royal Holloway Uni, it has always been 60 mph all the way to Sunningdale (apart from the 40 mph stretch past Virginia Water)

After making progress on this part, then slowing to 40 through Virginia water, as I accelerated up the hill I noticed that it is now 40 mph all the way to Sunningdale.

This made me question if the first part, Egham to Virginia Water, has also changed to 40 mph but will check that out when back at work.

Such a shame as I have always enjoyed that part early in the morning.

Be prepared for more potential widespread limit drops. The main Surrey County Council (which is still majority Conservative) decided on Friday to propose having another go at bringing in blanket 20 limits to all residential roads and as well as many others that are currently 30 - whilst also considering reducing other higher limits down by 10+ mph. All in the name of safety, pollution, climate change, promoting better living, etc (take your pick basically).

Remember, this is essentially just a rehash of the same proposals as 2021 / 2022 (which eventually got voted down by a majority of councillors) where the original plan had been to trial a max 30 / 20 over the massive rural area between Guildford & Dorking as some councillors there thought it would deter the illegal green laners and dirt bike riders rolleyes Of course this time around, the plans will more than likely be tied to additional central funding for other services to encourage it to be voted through.

More misery on the way. banghead

I moved from Berkshire to Surrey last year, but am starting to wonder why I didn't move to somewhere like Yorkshire or Scotland!

Unsurprisingly, the double black wire cables (to count traffic & measure speed of traffic passing over them) have now arrived in 2 areas of the 50 stretch of the A30, just after the pedestrian traffic lights on from Collingwood and just before the 50/40 limit change heading into Camberley.

So if they're data gathering, it's fair to assume that's the proposed drop to 40 pretty much confirmed on that stretch at some point this year then.

Got that as well, "consultation" = "we've already decided, but have to make like it's democratic and fair, somehow".
