Hi,

what is the impact of the new runway at heathrow likely to be for windsor?

We are likely to move there.
But my partner is now raising concerns about the extension at heathrow.

Thanks

They seem to fly low over Windsor already imho. A few years ago plane numbers did go up albeit the airport tried to argue they had changed nothing! A lot of people complained then it went back to "normal" .

If you want to live anywhere to the east of Reading in the Thames Valley, even with 2 runways, you had better not mind some aircraft noise. Windsor is obviously a lot worse, being closer.

I think I've seen online maps of the proposed flight paths with a 3rd runway, see if it affects where you're planning to live.

Do we think the industry will genuinely have the appetite, much less the traffic for another runway after C19 ?

It’s not going to be up and running for many years yet! By which time they’ll all be electric. So we’re told...

That will be the day I stop flying, bad enough worrying about running out of battery in car, never mind at 30,000 feet smile

They will still produce the same wind noise no matter what powers the turbine.

Talk of building a third runway when really speaking they could probably put in a new housing estate on one of the ones already there.

The third runway is going to be a white elephant. Can’t see travel ever fully recovering, the message on global climate change is hitting the younger generation, by the time the third runway is built those teens will be the people making the decisions on international travel.

We moved from Wokingham 14 years ago because of the noise from planes , from 04.30 am when they start stacking before the airport opens , unbearable in the end.
Windsor will be awful already without another runway.

A third runway will mean new flight paths. Those haven't been decided yet and being so close to the airport any changes for Windsor will only be for departures.

Heathrow was committing to no arrivals before 0530, 60mins later than now.

Arrivals over Windsor are 30% of the year, but it can vary as it's wind dependent.

They were also looking to remove the Westerly Preference which would mean that 30% goes up.

Those 0530 arrivals would be rotated across all 3 runways on a weekly basis. So a prolonged period of easterlies may mean you only have them overhead one.week in three. Dependent upon the property location.

Any questions shout. I was one of the R3 consultation team.

Nope. I used to count them every hour and send an email; it went up with no notice for a few years then came back down. At one point a plane was flying over every few minutes. Not any more and yes same before covid hit.

Heathrow has been full since about 2013. Baring a couple of slots that were added here and there, there isn't any room for more flights.

Certainly not enough a day for someone to notice the difference.

What will be the impact on pollution in the air?

At the moment us aqi is very good at around 2 or 3 for windsor.

Do you know what that would likely be pre covid with more flights?
And what is projected post expansion?

I am getting a lot of flack from my partner about the health risks of moving to windsor, both in normal and post expansion timres.

Thanks if you have any info.

Expansion will only be permitted if it can be done within the air quality, noise and climate change targets.

However, if your wife is this concerned about it, I'd be wary about moving.

In my previous career at the airport I dealt with many people like your wife, and if she is triggered enough
to be asking these questions now, nothing you can say or do will help.

The third runway has been ongoing. I recall giving a lift to a guy in 2007 to the protest camp, 14 years ago! It may never happen

Nothing would make me move to Windsor. I was born and raised there, moving away in my late teens but parents still live there. When I used to visit pre covid, I would have trouble sleeping and during the day the planes just seemingly non stop. Only times I recall it ever being an issue when I lived there though was concorde and our conservatory rattling like a citroen.

I also recall the protests before I left, so if that's the only thing that concerns you I'd not worry, must be coming on 15 years.

Clearly though you just tune it out, like living near a railway track or slaughterhouse, it becomes background white noise.
