Buckle up guys, yours in for a long ride!
I cannot believe they are now doing the same to to the M4 as the M3.
You can pretty much bet the 5 years will slip too.
Yay.

I thought the Govt were going to stop the long roadworks thing that has blighted the M3. I hope they don't plan on setting up continous roadworks from Theale to Hayes.I cannot believe they are now doing the same to to the M4 as the M3.

Assuming the roadworks on the M3 are finished on schedule (which I doubt) there will be 3 months with both major routes into London from the South East with major roadwork disruption.
5 years (minimum) of roadworks on the M4 - what joy.
They were scheduled to finish in July this year. 5 years (minimum) of roadworks on the M4 - what joy.

My nearest junction is Theale, and thankfully my commute is along the A34. I imagine it will be rather hellish. I think I signed a petition for them not to do it. Traffic isn't all that terrible until near Slough anyway, hopefully they don't go any further as I go west more than I go east!
Welcome to the nightmare everyone!
I generally use the M3 between J4 and J2 at least once a week (thankfully not in the rush hour) and have done since the "Smart" motorway work started back in the last century (well it feels like that)!
It was allegedly scheduled to finish by the end of 2016 (that sign disappeared within 2 weeks) and the last one I saw said Summer 2017 - so realistically some time in my lifetime, possibly!
Then you get to the M25 at J12 and find the queue on the slip-road with a 40 limit to back the traffic up and create congestion - Smart my a*se!
Of late I find it quicker to use the A331 with NSL, A31 with 60 limit, short stretch of A3 around Guildford with a 50 limit then A3 with NSL (and no cameras, yet) then clear road after J10 of the M25!
A roads, the new motorways!

Mental. Surely we could do it in a month? Or maximum a year? Do all the bridge widening, gantry erection etc simultaneously. Wire the lot up, job done. Surely it can't take that long to bolt some metal structures together.
Just keep adding manpower. The effect on the economy will more than offset the additional cost.

Yep, my thoughts exactly.Just keep adding manpower. The effect on the economy will more than offset the additional cost.
Reading the consulation responses:
Concerns about safety
3.3.3 The largest area of concern relates to safety. These predominantly refer to the removal of the hard shoulderand its replacement with a running lane.
3.3.4 Disabled Motoring UK raised concerns that disabled drivers may have to open a door fully to exit a vehicle or be unable to exit a vehicle stranded in a live lane which increased the risk to them.
3.3.5 Our advice is unchanged from current practice that drivers should leave their vehicles where it is practical and safe to do so, but if this is not possible, drivers should remain in their vehicle with their hazard warning lights on.
3.3.6 In the event of any vehicle coming to a stop in a live lane, our Regional Control
Centre will protect the scene using signs and signals......
Well, I've twice had to stop quickly in the hard shoulder, once I had a tyre wall cut top to bottom after running over some scrap metal and another time I drove over a rucksack, continaing hard objects, that jumped out of a builders pick-up in front, so needed to stop urgently to check for damage. I don't fancy driving onwards on the wheel rim, up to 2.5km to a refuge, or waiting stationary in the left lane to be hit by an SMS-ing HGV pilot that missed/ignored the sign that may be up to 1.5km previous. No thanks!!!

Excellent timing from all concerned by the looks of it to add maximum annoyance for annoying heading London bound. The M3 still has at least 15 months left to run on that after the numerous push backs on completion date there, so that's a minimum of a year overlap with the M4.
Plus, aren't they starting the reconstruction of The Meadows r/bout quite early in 2017 too? I'm sure that will take just as long as the one in Basingstoke did, with the obligatory 6+ month delays
