M3 southbound today
Discussion
Avoid at all costs - closed junctions 3 to 4 at around 12.30, although I believe that one lane has recently re-opened.
Air ambulance has been and gone, no fatalities thankfully - but take care out there.

"There are long delays on the southbound M3 due to the earlier accident involving a car and a van between junction 3 for Bagshot and Lightwater and junction 4 for Camberley. All lanes have reopened, but there is still severe congestion in the area.
The A30 London Road between the Meadows Roundabout in Camberley is heavily congestion through the town and all the way to the A322 in Bagshot as traffic diverts off the M3.
By the same token, the B331 Red Road is also very busy due to people escaping the M3 queues in the other direction.
Other local roads affected are the A30 in Sunningdale, the A319 Chertsey Road in Chobham and the A325 Portsmouth Road in Frimley.
The A331 Blackwater Valley Route between the M3 and Camberley at the Meadows is also bearing some of the brunt."

It's fked again!!!
Northbound between 3 and 2 incident is a can and several cars.
Seriously what the fk is wrong with this bit of motorway must be the worst in UK for crashes. I mean it's an enforced 50mph too this smart motorway will solve nothing!!
Fortunately I was on the bike A322 is blocking up back to the ascot turning and it'll be back to coral reef soon come rush hour

I think part of the issue is that pretty much everyone is doing the same speed and with it "only" being 50 it may lull people into a false sense of security. At least with normal NSL in place you have people doing anything between 50 & 90+ so people are perhaps more aware of their surroundings.
With all 3 lanes trundling along at the same speed, there's often no 'escape route' available, so if something unexpected happens, a collision is less avoidable.
You need a speed differential between lanes to open up some gaps and provide more ways to get out of trouble. When conditions are good and NSL applies, this generally works.
This week, the M3 does seem to have been particularly bad but there have been other closures around the M25 as well. I always think driving standards get worse when the temperature goes up.

Classic illustration of the problem this morning going northbound as there was a broken down van in the middle lane between Lightwater and the M25. Caused big queues and almost everyone approaching the van (at a slow speed due to the traffic) had to take avoiding action as they weren't paying attention! Person with the van must have properly broken down too as there was no attempt to limp to one of the gaps in the barriers.
