Conveyancing Solicitors - Reading Area
Discussion
Hi All,
Fairly new to posting on PH but been reading posts and the site for a long time.
I have just moved down to Reading from Aberdeen with the Mrs - she relocated with work and I followed to a Job in London. We are looking to buy a house soon, but whereas I would have known where to go up north for a solicitor I am not sure who/which firm down here is recommended? Basically someone to carry out the legal side of purchasing a house.
Any advice who to avoid, or recommendations would be a big help!
Many thanks

Try www.thpsolicitors.co.uk - based in either Lower Earley or Henley.
A good sized practise with specialist Partners for most eventualities.
I've used them a number of times and they've been pretty good.

There's no reason why you can't still use solicitors that you know, even if they are miles away. I bought and sold my (southern based) property and both times the solicitor was based in the north. When I sold I used a different company and everything was online anyway, so they could have been based on the other side of the world.
You may find that the costs quoted from your northern solicitors are cheaper than those given down here in the south, which is bonus.
Unless of course the property that you wish to buy is complicated and sitting face-to-face with your solicitor would be beneficial then I wouldn't worry where they are based.

If you happen to go through Romans don't, whatever you do, go with their "in house recommended solicitors" because they actually mean "Romans Conveyancing work with a national network of conveyancing professionals" which in turn actually means Hallmark Law, a bigger shower of ste you'll be hard-pressed to find. (Though a quick google can't find them anymore, maybe they've gone bust).
If you already know a decent solicitor, use them.

Thanks all for the help, really appreciate it and will make some calls. Very new to the area and with no family nearby to ask for advice.
I would have spoken to a solicitor up north, but would prefer to have someone local who knows the area, and perhaps the vendor's solicitor too. Also, the buying/selling process is different in England than Scotland I understand.
Thanks for the nod on Romans - always dubious about "in house" etc!!

It's Manor House Law, they are based in Leeds, which is probably why you can't find them!If you already know a decent solicitor, use them.

I'd recommend these as well. Just dealt with conveyancing of a house sale for me and were really nice to work with. Nothing that difficult for them, but they were quick to respond to my mails/calls and did everything they committed to very quickly.A good sized practise with specialist Partners for most eventualities.
