I need some steel bar, 4-5mm thick 40-50mm wide and a metre long. It is to use as a large washer/retainer under my van for a rock and roll bed on my camper build (see here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Where would you get this from ? skips ? I have a angle grinder and am happy to scavenge and sort out someone else throw away angle iron. It doesn't have to be pretty.

Or alternatively where would you buy it from ?

Cheers

when you say bar do you mean plate ?

bar:

plate:

I'm not local but there is a metal supermarket in NW10 (11 Hanover West Industrial Estate, London Borough of Ealing, London NW10 7NB) but that may be a little ride for you. They'd sort you out and would cut to exact size on a press.

ETA: This place is closer http://www.actonbrightsteel.co.uk/index.php not sure if they will sell small quantities or not. Worth an ask.

Where ever you go take cash, they will probably have a offcuts bin that may contain what you are after.

If its a one off piece try metals4u online or pop in to a local fabrication place and ask if they have any off cuts or would be prepared to sell you a small piece. You would be surprised what we get when we are stuffed on a site and pop in to places on the beg smile

Cheers boys that place in staines it literally a walking distance from my house. I will pop in there and ask.

Roughly how much would 3 bars a metre long cost ? £10 a bar? too cheap, way too much?

I think that's probably the easiest option as you can guarantee they'll have it if it's wide enough.

Brilliant, great guaranteed option if I can't find it locally ( B and Q is 15 miles away)
