Pangbourne any PH live that way - sell it to me :)
Discussion
So I have seen a nice house in Pangbourne and just wondered if any other PH live out that way? I expect it will go quickly so I am cheating on the homework of what's it like living there etc....
What's it like in the mornings getting to the M4, Mrs still has a commute to Slough a couple of times a week.
Any comments on Primary schools would be useful.
Looks like there are a couple of nice old style pubs, although further investigation needed
Any other useful comments appreciated.
Cheers, Jon

I lived in Pangbourne for many years before moving to Dorset. I had to commute to Reading down the M4 and as long as you left at a decent time the traffic was not bad at all.
It's a nice enough village and there are loads of good places nearby for food and drinks/ sports/ cilture but Pangbourne itself is a little lacking in that area.
If you have any specific questions please ask.

Isn't there a new Lambo garage there now? Surely reason enough to move?
I've done a few commutes going the other way from Slough to junction 12, and it tends to busier going towards London in the morning; junction 8/9 in particular. Most of the time it bunches up, then gets going again.

Pangbourne is a decent enough place. Quiet mostly but busy at peak times. Lots of great access to the river with hundreds of acres of public access meadows; only a short drive up onto the Berkshire Downs and lots of forestry commission woodlands within a very short walk.
During normal commute times the traffic can be shocking - regularly queuing at least 30 mins in every direction towards the central mini-roundabouts. If you can avoid 8am to 9am and 5:15pm to 6:30pm though it's normally moving. Delivery lorries have a habit of delivering in the centre at morning peak times too which can add another 15-30 mins on to the traffic... AVOID the North side of Pangbourne, i.e. between the A340 Reading Road and the railway - mostly council, ex-council and a fair few benefit rentals. Also it's the main Great Western rail line so high speed services and freight run 24x7. Depending on budget then around Horseshoe Road, Kennedy Drive and Tidmarsh Road are decent areas.
Schools are good to very good - local state schools and private schools are well regarded. I think the default catchment for secondary is Theale Green which has dipped recently, however it crosses with Denefield (academy) and a few others which are very good. Primary schools are all good.
Excellent train connections towards London and the other way.
Also worth considering if you need to be near Pangbourne, are the western edges of Tilehurst (Long Lane and Dark Lane areas), Purley-On-Thames, Streatley and Goring.
A lot of the local pubs, hotels and cafes have been refurbished in the last couple of years, as well as a few new restaurants which includes a branch of the local PH favourite 'Punto' (Italian)! Good Indian, excellent Chinese and an amazing cheese shop! And yes, a Lamborghini dealer has also opened next to the Bentley dealership. Major retail choices of Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose are all a short drive away.
I spent a long time living around the area and have family and connections there now so drop me a pm if you have any specific questions...

Nice area - worth checking for motorway noise though. Most are ok, but did look there a couple of years ago and there was just a constant motorway hum when in the garden - even at weekends.

Theale Green was placed in special measures last December, don't know what it's progress is like now but I know the head stepped down at that time. Denefield is okay, it's emerged from special measures now and has had loads of money spent on it. They have a big, shiny new wing - half of which wasn't being used when I went to see the place in June. It had a 61% A*-C rate in the last GCSEs. I'm doing the tours of secondaries at the moment, so if you want to know more about the local schools just ask!
Anyway, just thought I'd add that. Otherwise I'd just agree with what everyone else has already said.

We live in Purley On Thames and while I love Pangbourne for its pubs and a couple of decent curry houses you are paying over the top for its location/status.
Getting through on a school morning is hell on a stick due to the schools in the area and the private ones surrounding (school run Mums in big 4x4 are the norm).
The whole area offers a great location for families though with loads of walks along the river and the local woods.
Worth looking at Purley, the local schools are good with Denefield secondary posting good results and it has just had massive investment with a new science block.
If you do look at Purley just remember that the Purley Park part floods (happened to us big style last year). However, house the A329 side of the railway will never flood so always worth baring in mind.

Used to live in Tidmarsh. Only snobs or nobs live there, so glad to get out. I do like Pangbourne and family spent over 50 years there over time including my childhood. Nan is still there but up the hill in the cemetery now. Good curry houses, ideal for me and the chilterns for mtb riding. Did look at Streatley before I bought a house in Tidmarsh and a load more money for less house. Pangbourne is nice mind you, but circumstances changed for me to move away. My mum is contemplating buying a downsize house and going back to Pangers.
Savacentre for shopping. Reading not far away, M4 OK. Was a grind to Slough for me, when I used to travel. Leave at 7am, maybe there for 8am, usually 8:30 to 9am.

I live in Pangbourne. Traffic is bad in the rush hour, and will be worse for the next 9 months while they rebuild the bridge across the Thames. It is only bad coming into the village though. Getting out in the morning is fine.
I appreciate you are only interested in primary schools at the moment. It would be remiss, though, to ignore the fact that there are two secondary grammar schools (Reading school for boys and Kendrick school for girls) in central Reading. Both are regularly in the top 10 or so state schools in the country. A number of Pangbourne children (including mine) catch the train in the morning to these schools.
