Chaps, my Mrs birthday on 3rd of Sept. She would like to go somewhere with good steak. I don't mind driving and budget not really an object. Please suggest away. Thanks in advance.

Castle - Ottershaw

Great pub
landlord with a sense of humour
Good beers

Been done before on the TV&S forum but I doubt if the "great" search system will find it!!

All Reading area and based on personal experience.

Miller & Carter - OK. For a steak house i was expecting greatness but only delivered averageness. Not special enough for a birthday IMHO.

Bell & The Dragon - Superb steak, had many here and the Hereford Rib of Beef on the Bone (£66 but feeds two big ones or 3 average eaters) is just divine. Good atmosphere, great service, good (but pricy)wine list and nice setting on the Kennet.

The French Horn (Sonning) - Just superb (if a little shabby chic). One of the best steaks (Chateaubriand) I have ever had. Very nice and feels special. The service is excellent, the wine list is amazing and ranges from reasonably priced to eye wateringly expensive. Great setting (planning to have our small wedding reception there next year). Been a good few times now and have never had any cause not to be delighted with the all round package.

Bell or the French Horn and I do not think you will be disappointed.

If you don't mind driving then I would highly recommend Lomito in Northwood, very very good food and a nearby car park that any low car can get into. (Sad but it's something I look for wink ) It's an Argentinian steak restaurant and a 300g fillet will set you back about £35. I took the gf for her birthday and we both agreed it was the best steak we've ever had. www.lomitorestaurants.com

Frenchda's recommendations in reading are seconded by me. Helps to live across the road from The Bel and The Dragon though!

Never had a bad steak whether ordering Fillet, Sirloin or their relatively new flat iron.

Cote also do fantastic steaks, however sometimes the cuts of meat aren't up to scratch so aren't as consistent as the others.

Hawksmoor and Gaucho both do excellent - if somewhat different - steaks. Personally I lean towards the Gaucho cooking style for ribeye, but I would eat at both every night of the week...

Little Dudley House in Dorking can also do a good steak, much better than the high street average.

Goucho's in Richmond is great but v expensive , or the italian Il Capriccio in Ewell does an awesome fillet steak for about £15 , fantastic value.

Can't say I was particularly impressed with it. Gaucho in contrast was fantastic. Heard good things about Goodmans but haven't tried it myself.

Had a cracking steak at the weekend at the Percy Arms in Chilworth incidently.

I've been to Cau too and it was disappointing. Also been to the Percy Arms a couple of times before and after the fire. Good steaks. I went to the Sea horse in Shalford last night and the fillet and rib eye were good.

Just booked the Percy Arms. Thank you for all the suggestions.
Been to Gaucho many times so fancy somewhere different.
I know the owner of Ascot Grill and can say its fantastic and same reason as above.
The others I have put on 'the list' and will try in due course.

Have a cracking weekend guys.

Would have had to wait at Miller & Carter for ages on Friday night so gave up and went to Cote as they found us a table.

Cote Du Boeuf (Think that's the spelling) special for 2 was really rather good, they were having a good day!

I used to have a great meal there until they reopened after the fire. Now, its an overpriced, underdelivering "gastropub". Its neither gastro, nor pub any longer. I'm sorry, Frik, but Alf & Co have gone "kop toe"...
