Hi all,

Not sure if it is of interest to anyone but there is a petition going against the use of surrey roads a cycle track. Feel free to spread the word.

Might as well petition against turning London into a 26 mile running track once a year too.

Got caught up in the practising the weekend before the race. The M25 was shut and we were trying to use the A25 to reach Folkstone. The cyclists created an utter nightmare with lorries struggling to overtake them and caravan drivers utterly incapable.

I agree, why should Peddel Pushers be able to close the roads

I friend of mine lives on the route in Weybridge, was a No Go Area the other weekend
(So had to spend the night with her!!)

May be us PistonHeads can have the roads shut so we can Race our cars !!

Speaking of cyclists a friend who does courier work nearly came a cropper on the stretch of the bends from Deepcut towards Pirbright yesterday when he came round one of the corners going down the hill and found 2 cyclists on his wrong side of the road banghead

Evidently a good 3 dozen cyclists were in about 3 groups using that part as a practice route / hillclimb but cycling nice & wide in formation so blocking anyone that was behind them from getting past, but obviously also attempting to overtake & cycle past the slower riders on the climb up the hill but doing so on the wrong side of the road banghead

No doubt if any of those had been knocked off while doing that the driver would be held accountable regardless of the action of the cyclist who was on the wrong side of the road frown

I think the difference is that the marathon only lasts 4-6 hours before traffic can use the roads plus it's a smaller area serviced by a decent public transport system.

The cycling thing fks a massive area up for a whole day - London, SW London, Surrey.

Anyone for tennis, J8-9 northbound M25 Tuesday 10am? Just 3 sets...

Damn. I thought this was a petition FOR using Surrey roads as a cycle track. That's something I might have given my backing to.

What gets me is that on the actual event day when they do close all the roads off they have no proper diversion routes in place for people that do need to travel regardless.
Plus there is a loss to business eg. Kwik Fit on Oatlands Drive was inaccesible. Now unless Kwik Fit decided to go into to the market of bicycle puncture repairs and checking bicycle brakes, i have a feeling they might of suffered from lost revenue!

You would have thought with best part of a years’ notice the people of Surrey would have had enough time to get organised so they didn’t run out of smoked salmon and sun dried tomatoes on the Sunday.

That petition is typical nimbyism and full of so many tired clichés the guy writing it should win an award. Maybe the 50,000 who have already applied for next year should start a counter one

while I have no desire to join the other middle aged men in lycra it does seem symptomatic of this country that no one is happy unless they're moaning or complaining about another bunch of people. Compare this to France where they make an event of the tour coming through their town and everyone enjoys it. More live and let live and less aggression is what's required. I can't understand where it's all gone wrong.

If many of the Peddle Pushers didn't feel the Highway Code wasn't also ment for them they would get more respect from me

I think we need to avoid turning this into yet another anti-cycling thread.

I think cycling's a fantastic way of getting fit and burning the calories but disrupting someone's entire day for your fun is a bit much.

I haven't bothered signing the petition as nothing will come of it. The powers that be have decided for whatever reason that the next one will go ahead. Fortunately, I'm not directly affected - luckily I'm in the "wrong" area of Surrey/SW London.

Of course it's NIMBYism. Why would someone in Spain give a st about standstill traffic in SW London?

France and elsewhere, this is normal. No diversions, just wait it out. The difference is that cycling is an accepted part of society, and as such the relationship between driver and cyclist is completely different. Fortunately these days in Britain it's regarded as important too; unfortunately, only as long as it stays inside the Olympic Velodrome.
