Did anyone else get the raging hump with that helicopter circling between 03:20 and 05:30 this morning?

It first came from the Hook direction, possibly following the railway or motorway passing directly overhead (Elvetham Heath) towards Farnborough. On going by what I could hear, it then circled back, passing again directly overhead and then remained in the vicinity for the next two hours at extremely low levels.

Admittedly, I am one of these people that hears about people complaining and thinks 'get a life' but this was honestly horrendous amounts of noise for that time of the morning and for such an extended period of time too. The windows were literally shaking in the frames and the neighbours car alarm went off as a result from one of the low passes.

I accept that living in this area (near RAF Odiham) that the sight and sound of a Chinook is not uncommon, nor is the Police Helicopter that also operates out of Odiham too, but this helicopter was neither of those.

This sounded like a very 'BIIIIIG' helicopter, the silhouette looked big as when it passed over (at probably no more than 400 feet) it looked almost the sort of size of a Black Hawk, it certainly had the sound of one. The jet turbines were easily heard over the noise of the rotorblades and I thought to begin with that it was landing it was that close.

So, did anyone else hear all this going on or should I lay off the Calpol? hehe

I got woken up in the early hours by some sirens going off for ages, sounded like multiple
police type with a background continuous tone with it.
Sounded a fair way off from Lightwater area but stationary ????

Checked all my security and let dog out into yard.
And returned to bed it also woke GF up too which turned out
to be a right result wink

Possibly a CH-53, those things sound like a low flying HGV.

Just to let you know that the police chopper doesn't live at Odiham anymore.

I've had a quick look at a couple of pictures and this could well be the culprit. It certainly fits the size of helicopter I would have expected to have made that level of noise. Why would it have been circling a residential area at very low levels for two hours at 3:20am in the morning though? irkedconfused

Possibly could have been a Merlin then, they visit Odiham and could have been on a night ex with the Chinooks?

We have Merlins flying low over us every day, I don't think they're that noisy.

Chinooks, now that's a different story, but I still love em!

Merlins are quite big (bigger than a black Hawk) three engines, and five blades which when turning will thump away at the air!!!

They're noisy when you're trying to sleep in a put up bed, in a barracks with 20 snoring (and farting) blokes!
I thought the dam thing was coming through the roof, although I reckon they were told we were visiting and did it on purpose biggrin
